Clinical Haematologist Consultant

We are looking for a dynamic and motivated Consultant in Haematology to join our friendly and enthusiastic team at the North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust (NCIC). An enthusiastic and forward‑thinking consultant will work within a supportive team covering North Cumbria.

Applicants must be registered with the GMC and on the Specialist Register. Full time is expected, but part‑time consideration may be given for personal reasons.

Main duties of the job

The post will be based at the Cumberland Infirmary and will work as an integrated service covering West Cumberland Hospital. The successful applicant will complement existing haematologists and nurses, providing level 2A Clinical Haematology care for NCIC patients.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

  • Full and Specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), with current licence to practise.
  • UK trained applicants: holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within six months of award.
  • Non‑UK trained applicants: evidence of equivalence to UK CCT.
  • FRCPath (Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists) or equivalent.
  • MRCP or equivalent.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to entry to the UK CCT in Pathology.
  • High standard of clinical skill and expertise in Pathology.
  • Clinical governance and ability to offer expert opinion on a range of pathological problems, both emergency and elective.
  • Full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • APLS, ATLS, inter‑hospital transfer training.

Teaching

  • Experience and commitment to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff.
  • Experience teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates.
  • Experience supervising SpRs.
  • Teaching of non‑medical health professionals.
  • Educational qualification.

Research, Audit and Clinical Governance

  • Experience and commitment to medical audit.
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research.
  • Publications in peer‑reviewed journals.

Management and Administrative

  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of Pathology service.
  • Ability to cover on call.
  • Experience of audit management.

Communication skills and abilities

  • Empathetic and sensitive approach to patient needs.
  • Approachable and effective multi‑disciplinary team member with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Team loyalty, positive approach to lessons learnt, confident approach without being arrogant.
  • IT skills.

  • Demonstrable evidence of lifelong learning.
  • Reflective approach to personal development and effective management of poor performance.
  • Participation in appropriate peer review processes.
