Finance Director | Unicorn-Stage Deep Tech Hardware Business | London | £140-£170K + Equity
The Client
We are partnering with a hardware technology company at unicorn valuation, currently raising their Series D. Their work is driving a hyper-jump of technological advancement in their industry. The business model is capex-light, high gross margins, and the company is 18–24 months from a realistic exit event. This is a business at a genuinely pivotal moment.
The Role
This is a ‘step-up’ Finance Director hire, reporting directly to an experienced CFO of scale-up expertise. You will own the long-term financial model, build the FP&A function, develop the treasury framework, and sit close to the fundraise and exit process. On the other side, you will partner with an existing ACA-qualified controller to bring additional rigour to the financial operations and oversee the transactional team. The scope is broad: business partner to research, engineering, commercial, and operations, with a real seat at the table on capital markets strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and lead the FP&A function, including the annual budget, quarterly reforecast, and board/investor reporting frameworks
- Own the long-term financial model and scenario planning across multiple growth and funding paths
- Develop pricing models and commercial frameworks for the company’s quantum error correction solutions
- Develop the treasury framework appropriate for a unicorn-stage, R&D-intensive business
- Partner with the CFO on fundraise strategy, capital markets narrative, and exit preparation (M&A, IPO, SPAC)
- Oversee financial operations alongside the existing controller, strengthening controls and governance
- Build and develop a finance team spanning FP&A, financial operations, and business partnering
- Act as a trusted commercial partner to business unit leaders across research, engineering, and commercial
Essential Experience
- ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent professional qualification
- Track record in high-growth, venture-backed technology companies at Series B or beyond
- Direct experience of a fundraise process — ideally has been close to Series B, C, or D
- Exposure to M&A, IPO, or SPAC environments
- Deep expertise in financial modelling, scenario planning, and long-range forecasting
- Demonstrated ability to build financial processes and functions from the ground up
Desirable Experience
- Background in deep tech, hardware, semiconductor, or AI infrastructure businesses
- Experience with high-margin, low-volume hardware business models
- International finance experience across multiple jurisdictions
