Job overview

Support the provision of a safe & secure environment across University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust sites, including Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital & Louisa Martindale Building. Manage traffic flows and car parking across Trust sites, provide advice & support to staff, patients & visitors regarding parking arrangements, and maximise revenue collection from Car Parking facilities.

Main duties of the job

  • Manage traffic flow and access/egress of vehicles into Trust car parks and access roads in line with the Trust Traffic Management & Car Parking Policy.
  • Undertake cash collection and reconciliations.
  • Conduct daily checks and maintain car parking facilities & equipment (barriers, ticket & payment machines).
  • Issue enforcement notices in line with Trust policy.
  • Perform regular foot patrols of hospital car parks and access roads.
  • Provide traffic support during emergency incidents on Trust premises.
  • Monitor CCTV footage.
  • Maintain equipment (radio communications, body‑worn cameras, etc.).
  • Avoid loss of property belonging to the Trust, its staff, patients and visitors.
  • Carry out any other duties as directed by the Group Head of Security or authorised representative.
  • Work within Trust policies and procedures related to risk, health and safety.

  • Deal sensitively and empathetically with individuals seeking assistance with parking or navigating the hospital site.
  • Communicate by telephone, intercom and face‑to‑face with staff, visitors, patients and external agencies.
  • Ensure effective communication between all internal and external agencies.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of traffic activity or incidents in accordance with relevant legislation and Security Department Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Participate in appropriate training and learning opportunities to improve skills and knowledge.
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties as delegated or requested by the manager or supervisor.
  • Complete required statutory, mandatory and job‑related training.

Qualifications and Experience

  • No qualifications required.
  • Training will be provided.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
  • SIA Door Supervisor Licence.
  • Experience of traffic management / car parking.
  • Experience of using radios.

Skills

  • Proficient use of ICT.
  • Aware of competing priorities between income generation from car parking and sensitivities of working in a healthcare environment.
  • Responsive to planned and unplanned activity, including emergency situations.
  • Analytical skills – ability to analyse information and make sound judgments.

People Management and Development

  • Experience communicating complex or contentious information to staff and others at all levels, both internally and externally.

Specific Requirements

  • Honesty and integrity.
  • Full UK Manual Category B driving licence (car).
