About the Electoral Commission

The Electoral Commission is the UK’s independent body overseeing elections and regulating political finance. Everything we do is about ensuring trust, participation, and integrity in the democratic process.

As we enter a bold new chapter under our five-year Corporate Plan, we are increasing our workforce and transforming how we plan and deliver core services. This post plays a central role in that journey.

About the role

We’re looking for an Infrastructure Engineer to help support and develop our core IT systems across cloud and on‑premises environments. This is a hands‑on technical role with a strong focus on Microsoft Azure, networking, and infrastructure operations.

You’ll play a key role in ensuring our infrastructure is secure, scalable, and reliable, supporting colleagues across the organisation to work efficiently and safely. Alongside core infrastructure responsibilities, this role offers a structured pathway into cyber security, providing valuable exposure to security tools, practices, and frameworks.

Key responsibilities

  • Supporting and maintaining Azure infrastructure (VMs, networking, storage, backups)
  • Managing and troubleshooting enterprise networking (DNS, DHCP, VLANs, Meraki)
  • Providing 3rd line support for infrastructure and escalated service desk issues
  • Ensuring systems are patched, monitored, and operating securely
  • Supporting disaster recovery (DR) testing and backup validation
  • Assisting with server builds, deployments, and system upgrades
  • Creating and maintaining technical documentation and user guidance
  • Providing on‑site infrastructure support across our offices in London, Cardiff, Belfast and Edinburgh, including occasional travel as required

About the team

You’ll join a collaborative IT function within the Regulation and Digital Transformation directorate, working closely with Senior Infrastructure and Cyber Security leads. The team is responsible for delivering secure, reliable, and modern IT services across the Commission, supporting colleagues in multiple locations. We work in a highly collaborative way, sharing knowledge and continuously improving our systems and processes.

There is a strong focus on learning and development, particularly in cyber security, with opportunities to gain exposure to new technologies, formal training, and industry‑recognised certifications.

Who we’re looking for

This role would suit someone with a solid foundation in infrastructure or IT support who is looking to develop their technical skills and progress their career, particularly into cloud and cyber security. You’ll be someone who enjoys problem‑solving, takes ownership of issues, and is eager to learn in a fast‑evolving environment.

Required experience

  • Experience supporting Microsoft Azure environments (VMs, networking, storage)
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals (DNS, DHCP, VLANs)
  • Experience with Windows Server environments
  • Experience handling infrastructure support or 2nd/3rd line issues
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical issues clearly

Beneficial experience

  • Experience with Cisco Meraki or similar technologies
  • Awareness of cyber security principles
  • Basic knowledge of SQL or scripting (PowerShell, Python, Bash)
  • Interest in working towards certifications (e.g. Security+, Azure Security)

Benefits

We offer a strong total reward package, including:

  • Flexible working and hybrid model (40% office minimum)
  • 28 rising to 30 days annual leave + bank holidays
  • Study support for professional qualifications
  • Ongoing learning and development opportunities
  • Ride2Work, eye care vouchers and more

Equal opportunities

The Electoral Commission is proud to be a Level 2 Disability Confident Employer. As part of this commitment, we aim to prioritise interviews for disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria listed in the job description. We also welcome requests for reasonable adjustments at any stage of the recruitment process or within the workplace.
