An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated person to join our team at The Royal Surrey Hospital (RSH) and be part of our growing oesophago-gastric (OG) team. This is a part-time post (22.5 hours per week) for a fixed term of 12 months.
The Royal Surrey is an established regional unit for both oncology and benign surgical OG procedures, with chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments delivered onsite from Royal Surrey Cancer Centre. We are looking for somebody with experience in surgery and / or oncology with an interest in the speciality. We need a team player who takes pride in providing an efficient and effective dietetic service. The caseload will be very varied and will work closely within the OG MDT within RSH and the wider Surrey & Sussex Cancer Alliance.
The Dietetic Department at RSH has an active audit and research culture, promoting clinical effectiveness in patient care. You will join a forward thinking and innovative dietetic team, which undertakes student training and is involved in teaching at the University of Surrey as well as supporting students with dissertation projects. Main duties of the job
To provide a highly specialised nutrition and dietetics service for patients with both benign and malignant oesophago-gastric (OG) disease, at the Royal Surrey Foundation Trust (RSFT). To lead and supervise the acute surgical OG team and work with the OG dietetic leads to support the expanding surgical service and develop and deliver an early assessment and intervention pathway.
Job responsibilities
The post holder will provide a specialist dietetic support service for patients diagnosed with oesophago-gastric cancer who are referred for treatment at the centralised OG service based at RSFT, along with complex benign oesophago-gastric disease. The post holder will support the development of an early assessment and intervention programme along with a co‑ordinated service for the wider Surrey & Sussex Cancer Alliance. The post holder will be a resource of expert nutritional knowledge for other members of the OG MDT across Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire. The post-holder will provide training to undergraduate dietitians including supervising their clinical placements.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- BSc in Dietetics or equivalent and registration with HCPC
- Hold, or be working towards a Master’s degree or other post‑grad course to masters level, or equivalent qualification by experience
- Student training course
- Member of the British Dietetics Association
Knowledge
- Post‑registration experience of managing surgical patients
- Advanced knowledge of nutritional support and it’s management (including enteral and parenteral nutrition)
- Understand of the complex effects of cancer and it’s treatment on nutritional status
- Evidence of continuing professional development and advancement of knowledge
- Experience of planning, delivering and evaluating group education of patients
- Experience of clinical audit and/ or research
- Experience in clinical supervision of dietetic students and willingness to participate in student training
- Contribution to management of staff i.e. supervision/development of staff, recruitment
- Membership of relevant specialist groups such as PENG, AUGIS or BDA Oncology Group
