Do you want to have the opportunity to develop and grow as a Band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse within the Trauma & Orthopaedic Speciality?
We are currently looking to offer an experienced nurse the opportunity to work within a new senior management role; someone who aims to lead and support the hard working inpatient ward team to provide the best care and outcomes for their patient group.
This position will be on our Orthopaedic trauma wards B54 Pierce Ward or Forrester Brown B34, which is a mixed sex ward, caring for patients who are presenting with traumatic Orthopaedic injuries. The orthopaedic specialty is dynamic, forward thinking and constantly striving to improve the patient’s pathway.

Main Duties
- Ensure that all clinical documentation is completed correctly by members of the nursing team.
- Maintain a safe ward/department environment.
- Assist in the establishment and monitoring of protocols/care pathways.
- Supervise junior staff in the delivery of care through effective monitoring, mentoring, clinical supervision and reflective practice.
- Provide emergency cover, where possible, within the unit.
- Maintain accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care within the framework of team nursing, incorporating the Named Nurse initiative.
- Proactively coordinate the patients’ discharge arrangements in accordance with RUH Discharge Policy ensuring involvement of other agencies as necessary.
- Promote a patient focused enhanced recovery approach to care in collaboration with all relevant health professionals.
- Educate patients and their carers where a need has been identified.
- Provide information enabling patients to make choices about a healthier lifestyle.
- Promote and maintain effective communication within the ward/department, GPs, community staff and other hospitals with regard to ongoing patient care.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and ensure all staff understand its relevance.
Qualifications and Training
Essential Criteria
- Registered Nurse with > 2 years clinical experience.
- Demonstrates evidence of ongoing continuous professional development.
- Standards for Student supervision & assessment qualification.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience of recent student supervisions.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential Criteria
- Thorough and up-to-date knowledge of nursing theory and best practice.
- Understanding of the basic principles of effective staff management.
- Regular experience of taking charge and problem solving throughout shifts.
Desirable Criteria
- Evidence of Leadership.
- Computer and IT Literacy Skills.
- Relevant orthopaedic clinical experience at Band 5.
- Ability to apply Orthopaedic Traction and provide cascade teaching.
