Applications areinvited for a Locum Specialty Doctor in a full-time post in Oral andMaxillofacial Surgery, based at Rotherham General Hospital, from the presentuntil the end of February 2027. Thesuccessful applicant would join a close-knit team of permanent staff of threeConsultant Surgeons and two Trust Doctors (Specialty Doctor level) in the OMFSdepartment.

Main duties of the job

The main duties ofthe post would consist of OMFS out-patient clinics and Minor Oral Surgeryoperating lists, with the possibility of occasional Day Surgery operatinglists. The post-holder would also beinvolved in the supervision, support and education of junior staff, and in theClinical Effectiveness and Governance activity within the department.

Job responsibilities

The Department

The department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust delivers specialist elective surgical treatments to patients from the Rotherham area, providing in-patient and day surgery operating, out-patient Minor Oral Surgery, and out-patient clinics at Rotherham General Hospital. In addition, the department provides a specialist OMFS emergency service for patients from the catchment areas of Rotherham, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals.

The Maxillofacial Surgery Unit at Rotherham General Hospital treats the full spectrum of OMFS diagnoses. Special interests within the department are head and neck cancer surgery, salivary gland surgery including the management of salivary gland calculi using sialo endoscopy, orthognathic surgery, the surgical management of skin cancers of the head and neck, and implant surgery. In addition, the department treats a large volume of maxillofacial trauma, and the consultants in the department are experienced in the use of up-to-date techniques such as orbital reconstruction using custom-made orbital implants, and the management of fractures of the mandibular condyle with endoscopically assisted fixation. Approximately 350 emergency cases are operated on in the department each year.

Patients with head and neck mucosal malignancy are diagnosed in the outpatients department at Rotherham. Minor H+N cancer surgery is carried out at Rotherham Hospital, and patients who require major Head and Neck cancer surgery are treated at the Head and Neck Cancer surgical centre at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.

A large volume of dento-alveolar surgery is carried out in the department, under general anaesthesia, IV sedation and local anaesthesia.

Children who require dental extractions under general anaesthesia are treated in the purpose-built Poswillo Unit minor surgery suite at Rotherham General Hospital.

The Post

The post is a full-time fixed-term locum post, based at Rotherham General Hospital, covering the maternity leave of the current post-holder.

The post-holder would be required to provide routine OMFS outpatient clinics, minor oral surgery operating lists and occasional day surgery operating lists.

The post-holder would also be expected to be involved in providing support, supervision and education for the eight Dental Core Trainees and two Foundation Doctors in the department and playing an active part in the Clinical Effectiveness and Governance agenda in the department.

The post does not have a regular on-call commitment.

Person Specification

Research and Audit

  • Evidence of audit and the implementation of change following the audit
  • Relevant research published in peer review journal

Clinical Skills

  • Competent abilities and skills in dento-alveolar surgery
  • Ability to operate without direct senior supervision

Education and Teaching

  • Experience in teaching students, peers or more junior members of staff
  • Experience of running teaching / training programmes

Experience

  • 4 years full time post-graduate working in a clinical area (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis)
  • Experience in dento-alveolar surgery

Management Skills

  • Demonstrate effective team working skills
  • Time management and organisational ability. An example may be they have developed and run training programmes
  • Proven knowledge of systems and process of NHS or equivalent
  • Sense of understanding and commitment to corporate responsibility
  • Commitment to and understanding of their responsibility to the organisation

Qualifications

  • Full registration and a licence to practice with the GDC
  • Please confirm your GDC number
  • MFDS / MJDF qualification or equivalent
