University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust — one of the UK’s leading NHS Trusts — is recruiting a Senior Support Pharmacist for Healthcare of Older People based at Good Hope Hospital.

This role will enable you to build your clinical expertise and leadership skills within a forward‑thinking pharmacy team. You will deliver specialist clinical pharmacy services on the wards, develop your mentoring and leadership skills, contribute to education and training programmes, and supervise junior and trainee pharmacists — all with strong support around you.

You will have access to post‑graduate clinical pharmacy training and support to undertake or complete non‑medical prescribing, with protected learning time built into your working week.

The role is open to pharmacists who have completed a minimum of 2–3 early‑career rotations and have started, or are working towards, a clinical diploma or the RPS Newly Qualified Pharmacist Pathway. Applicants with 12 months’ post‑registration hospital experience may be appointed under Annex 21 (75% of Band 7 maximum), progressing to full Band 7 on meeting the relevant milestone.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide a specialist clinical pharmacy service to Healthcare of Older People wards, working with a complex patient group.
  • Perform prescription screening, medicines reconciliation, and therapeutic drug monitoring.
  • Contribute to audit, research, and service development activities.
  • Supervise junior and trainee pharmacists and contribute to education and training for pharmacy, nursing, and medical colleagues.
  • Participate in regional initiatives, reporting to the Medicines Management Advisory Group.
  • Take on meaningful leadership from day one, supporting the multidisciplinary team.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development, including protected learning time for clinical diploma, non‑medical prescribing, and independent prescribing qualification.

Qualifications

  • Completed or nearing completion (within the next 6 months) of a postgraduate clinical pharmacy qualification.
  • Willing to work towards a non‑medical prescribing qualification.
  • Membership of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • Has commenced a postgraduate clinical pharmacy qualification (applicable for Annex 21 roles).

Experience

  • Post‑registration work experience as a pharmacist in hospital pharmacy, covering a range of specialties.
  • Participation in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated commitment and enthusiasm for providing high‑quality pharmaceutical care.
  • Experience teaching/presenting to other healthcare professionals or patients.
  • Commitment to ongoing CPD.
  • Relevant clinical knowledge in hospital pharmacy.
  • Knowledge of national initiatives and guidelines, e.g., NICE, NSF.
  • Knowledge of resources to answer medicines information queries.
  • Ability to work with drug budget information.
  • Good knowledge of hospital clinical pharmacy and current issues.
