Aerothermal Engineer

Full Time – Derby

An Aerothermal Engineer is responsible for the development of Aerothermal capability, from engine delivery through NPI, EDP, to Production and Fleet support. The role covers gas path aerodynamics, thermodynamics and combustion, relying on computational fluid dynamics and experimentation across TRL rigs. Design and capability generation also requires understanding of system‑level interactions.

Key Accountabilities

  • Define requirements for aerothermal, ensuring accurate capture of higher‑level requirements across system, sub‑system, and component level.
  • Define concepts for all gas path aerothermal systems that meet requirements and evaluate using analytical methods to support trades at platform and power‑plant level.
  • Integrate gas path aerothermal systems with adjacent areas to optimise system performance.
  • Perform technical analysis at sub‑system and component level with appropriate fidelity for each lifecycle stage.
  • Conduct verification and validation to ensure requirements are met, including test specification, model calibration, and uncertainty quantification.
  • Manage knowledge, information and data for gas path aerothermal systems, ensuring proper filing, reporting and retention.
  • Provide production and in‑service support, including technical variances, root‑cause analysis and in‑service modifications.
  • Define and conduct capability acquisition, development and application, including internal or external funding.

Key Experiences And Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Engineering or equivalent qualification or experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge in mechanical design, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, thermal and mechanical analysis, cost engineering and product definition.
  • Analytical and innovative thinking applied to technical problems with balanced technical and business decisions.
  • Knowledge of product integrity, liability and certification frameworks.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body; in the UK attainment or pursuit of Chartered status is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills at all organisational levels.
