Business Development Director – MUST HAVE FM Experience
About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and commercially driven Business Development Director to join a growing Facilities Management and Technical Services business.
This senior leadership role is responsible for driving revenue growth, developing strategic partnerships, and expanding market presence across both public and private sectors. The successful candidate will lead business development activity across service, maintenance and projects, while managing a team covering business development, bidding and marketing.
The role requires a strategic and hands-on leader with strong experience in Facilities Management or technical services, alongside the ability to secure high-value contracts, manage complex tenders, and build long-term client relationships.
Key Responsibilities
Sales Leadership
- Identify, develop and convert new business opportunities across target sectors
- Take ownership of new business revenue targets and overall sales performance
- Analyse market trends, competitor activity and industry developments to identify opportunities and risks
- Represent the business at networking events, conferences and industry forums
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key industry contacts and decision makers
- Manage the full sales lifecycle from lead generation through to contract award
- Develop relationships with end users, facilities managers, managing agents and procurement consultants
- Negotiate and close contracts at both operational and board level
- Lead and support the business development team to ensure effective handling of enquiries and opportunities
- Oversee the preparation of proposals, presentations and tender submissions
Strategic Customer Relationships
- Build and maintain executive-level relationships with key clients and partners
- Develop account strategies aligned to wider business objectives
- Focus on long-term account growth through upselling, cross-selling and service expansion opportunities
- Identify high-value target customers and create effective account plans
- Support collaborative campaigns, events and strategic partnership initiatives
Team Leadership and Development
- Lead, mentor and develop a high-performing business development and bidding team
- Encourage collaboration, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement
- Support capability development across business development, estimating, marketing and bid management functions
Performance and Continuous Improvement
- Monitor business development performance metrics and adjust strategies to improve results
- Drive improvements in bid quality and win rates through analysis, feedback and lessons learned
- Keep up to date with market trends, procurement developments and industry best practice
Candidate Requirements
Experience
- Significant experience in business development within Facilities Management or technical services
- Proven success delivering high-value public and private sector tenders
- Strong experience producing commercially focused proposals and client solutions
Skills and Competencies
- Strong understanding of public sector procurement frameworks and compliance requirements
- Commercially astute with the ability to develop flexible, client-focused solutions
- Excellent leadership, stakeholder management and influencing skills
- Strong communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal
- Analytical, results-driven and highly organised
- Experience using CRM systems and business reporting tools
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint
