Senior Photonic Integrated Design Engineer/ Applications Engineer

Overview

Based in Cambridge this global organisation with offices around the world is recruiting a Photonics Lead and a Junior Photonics Engineer to accelerate the adoption of innovative photonic technologies into real‑world products. The role involves photonic integrated circuits, nano- and micro‑fabricated optics, nonlinear systems, and emerging fields such as quantum photonics, along with optical design using tools like Zemax.

Key Responsibilities

• Specification, design, fabrication/test and validation of complex PICs or photonic systems.
• Hands‑on photonic design/simulation (Lumerical/Ansys/Synopsys or equivalent) and PIC layout (Synopsys/Luceda/Nazca).
• Engagement with the photonics ecosystem (fabs, packaging, test).
• Deep knowledge of PIC platforms (SiPh/SiN/InP), integration methods and test strategies.
• Proof of ability to lead engineers, make technical trade‑offs and collaborate across disciplines.
• Experience in photonic/optical compute technologies.
• Experience in high‑speed PICs for datacom.
• Experience in free‑space optical communication.

Qualifications

• PhD in Physics, Electronics or a semiconductor‑related technology.
• High commercial competence alongside technical knowledge; engagement with clients will be part of the role.
• Experience working in multidisciplinary teams and delivering next‑generation photonic and optoelectronic systems.
• Strong communication skills and ability to translate technical concepts to stakeholders.
