Summary
You will serve as a Nuclear Engineer in the Nuclear Quality Division, Nuclear Engineering and Planning Department of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
Responsibilities
- You will develop, plan and provide technical direction over complex operations involved in the exchange of nuclear fuel cells on a nuclear‑powered vessel.
- You will coordinate, monitor, review, and integrate the efforts of engineers, consultants, health physicists, quality control inspectors, and mechanics to develop and implement work sequences and procedures.
- You will carry out continuing review of the engineering and production work to ensure that the requirements for propulsion plant and related work are met.
- You will recommend design and process modifications to eliminate malfunctions or improve performance, including follow‑up with testing or other monitoring to ensure satisfactory outcome.
- You will serve as a consulting source for shop personnel performing repair or manufacturing work and discuss and resolve operational and maintenance problems with shipyard personnel.

- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present; medical surveillance programs will be required.
- Travel may be required to CONUS and OCONUS and to remote or isolated sites; applicants must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods.
Qualifications
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS‑11 grade level.
- Experience utilizing technical expertise in the field of Nuclear Systems including construction, application, properties, operations, limitations, and processes.
- Experience with Naval Nuclear complex administration and technical procedures and quality controls governing all phases of nuclear reactor plant work.
- Experience with shipyard radiological controls and the Nuclear Power Manual Chapters for the Nuclear Quality Division.
- Independent judgment applying knowledge of quality engineering or radiological engineering principles as they pertain to nuclear reactor plant systems.
- Knowledge of Nuclear Engineering and Planning Department or Radiological Controls Division directive and NAVSEA policies relevant to the work.
- Ability to gather, collate, evaluate, and analyze quality and performance data, developing technical reports and recommendations to resolve quality problems.
- Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to analyze new developments and technical approaches for applicability to nuclear and quality control requirements.
Education
- Professional engineering degree accredited by ABET or equivalent (e.g., bachelor’s in engineering with accredited program).
- OR current registration as Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, D.C., Guam, or Puerto Rico.
- OR successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or similar licensure exam.
- OR at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences including specified engineering courses.
- OR completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific field with at least one year of professional engineering experience under supervision.
