The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) is the biggest farming organisation in the UK. Purpose of the role & how you will contribute
This role provides high‑quality economic analysis that informs and shapes policy affecting NFU member businesses and the wider agri‑food sector. As an Economist, you will analyse and communicate the impacts of current and proposed policy, acting as a trusted internal and external expert in designated economic and sector areas. You will evidence and champion the economic importance of farming and food production, translating complex economic insights into clear, compelling messages for diverse audiences.
What you’ll bring
You’ll bring strong economic knowledge, underpinned by a relevant degree or equivalent experience, and the ability to analyse complex policy and sector‑specific issues. You’ll be confident advising others, building effective relationships, and engaging with government and external stakeholders. With excellent communication skills, you’ll make complex economic information accessible across multiple channels. Organised, inquisitive and collaborative, you’ll work effectively under pressure, contribute as part of a team, and represent the NFU with credibility and professionalism.

This team takes an active role in developing and influencing the policies that benefit farming businesses across the UK. This means keeping up to date with and responding to national and international developments, engaging with and advising NFU members, and putting their decisions into action.
It’s exciting, complex work, covering every area of farming and dealing with a range of stakeholders, from government ministers, civil servants and the media, to local NFU branches. The sheer variety of our work means you can be involved in a wide range of projects from initial research to policy delivery.
