Job Title

Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner – Upper GI, Lower GI and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC)

Job Overview

A Band 7 training post that progresses to Band 8A after completion of a 3‑year apprenticeship and MSc Level 7 programme, with rotations through colorectal, upper GI and urology services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments for patients scheduled for same‑day surgical procedures, generate differential diagnoses and formulate management plans.
  • Provide high‑quality patient care throughout the perioperative period, including pre‑operative preparation, post‑operative monitoring and response to complications.
  • Participate in a structured training programme and MSc‑Level 7 accredited curriculum.
  • Work closely with surgeons and multidisciplinary team members to optimise patient outcomes and coordinate care.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, evidence‑based practice and research within the surgical same‑day emergency care unit.

Person Specification – Essential Criteria

  • Grounded knowledge of surgical nursing, upper and lower GI conditions, SDEC and ward environment.
  • Experience managing acute surgical patients.
  • Active professional registration (e.g., NMC, HCPC) and commitment to maintenance of professional portfolio and revalidation.

Person Specification – Desirable Criteria

  • Leadership experience.
  • Experience of service improvement, transformation and cultural change to improve service quality.
  • Ability to act independently, resolve complex clinical situations and exercise good decision‑making skills.
  • Experience working towards a Masters level qualification.
  • Understanding of advanced practice and the role of a non‑medical prescriber when appropriate.

Education / Training / Qualifications

  • Active professional registered qualification with a professional body (e.g., NMC, HCPC).
  • Working towards a non‑medical prescriber qualification if appropriate for the statutory profession.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of professional portfolio and registration revalidation.
  • Evidence of working towards a Masters level qualification.
