Scrub Practitioner General & Gynaecology Cluster

Band 5

Main area General & Gynaecology Theatres. Grade Band 5 Contract Permanent Hours. 37.5 hours per week. Post holders will be required to work a variety of shifts which may include 07:30‑20:00, 08:00‑20:30, 08:00‑18:00,19:45‑07:45. We are unable to accommodate fixed shift patterns and anything less than 23 hours per week due to the requirements on the service.

Main duties of the job

  • Participate in all aspects of clinical operating department work, providing a high standard of patient care and safety.
  • Deputise for the Team Leader when required/experience allows.
  • Involved in the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care within a flexible team structure.

Care Management

  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of scrub and circulating roles and responsibilities.
  • Be competent in all aspects of scrub/circulating technique and procedures.
  • Participate in all safety procedures including safety briefings, counts and management of clinical specimens.
  • Work as a skilled perioperative team member, assessing and caring for patients in operating theatre and related areas.
  • Run theatre lists efficiently and competently following policies and procedures.
  • Ensure safe, effective and efficient management of allocated resources in scrub/circulating areas.
  • Maintain instrumentation, equipment and consumable goods; report stock or equipment requirements.
  • Take appropriate action regarding faulty equipment per Trust policy and participate in ordering and training of new equipment.
  • Keep the department clean, organised, with adequate supplies, correctly cleaned, working and stored.
  • Supervise junior and unqualified colleagues in assessment of patients and provide specialist knowledge.
  • Support Theatre Managers in developing and reviewing policies for safe use of equipment and hazardous substances.

Person specification

Education / Training / Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse with current live NMC registration or Registered ODP with current HCPC registration.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Teaching and assessing qualification (998 or equivalent) or willingness to undertake after 2 years post registration.

Work Experience

  • Recent experience as a Registered Nurse / ODP in an acute operating theatre setting.
  • Experience across a range of operating theatre scrub specialties.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Effective verbal and written communication, including report writing and record keeping.
  • Contribution to team development.
  • Sound knowledge of NMC / HCPC code of professional conduct and current perioperative issues.
  • Excellent organisational skills, problem‑solving ability and ability to remain calm under pressure.
