JOB TITLE – Technical Author

LOCATION – Aldermaston

DEPARTMENT – Engineers

SECURITY CLEARANCE – SC

The Role

To prepare, originate and present technical information in a manner that informs others about background, risk, safety, justification, change, or step‑by‑step engineering sequence for operation, plant, and procedure based on research, analysis and evaluation of technical/engineering theory, data and information.

Key Objectives

  • Document origination and retention – use personal knowledge, research, and analysis to formulate, collate, evaluate information for Method Statements, Risk Assessments, and Change control documentation, ensuring adherence to schedule.
  • Apply relevant engineering or technical principles, plan the order and sequence of information, refine and develop illustrations, proof own and colleagues’ copy for accuracy and consistency.
  • Prepare, originate and submit approved documentation under the direction of Site Manager/Project Manager.
  • Index and catalogue work for safe storage and efficient retrieval.

Technical Liaison & Support

  • Liaise over engineering, scientific and technical requirements with project team members, subcontractors, suppliers and clients.
  • Originate technical documents and reports for the client, contribute to technical meetings, respond to enquiries with informed guidance.
  • Provide technical input for tenders and bids as required.

Commercial Awareness

  • Contribute to business development by sharing appropriate information and intelligence.
  • Recognise the potential impact of actions for the company, clients and external bodies.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Educated to ONC or equivalent level in engineering, communication or appropriate subjects – Essential.
  • HND/Degree in engineering – Desirable.
  • Membership of a relevant technical/professional body – Desirable.
  • IOSH Working Safely or Level 2 Health & Safety – Relevant training provided.

Experience & Knowledge

  • Proven ability to create and originate documentation for instruction, justification, process change or information – Essential.
  • Experience in a similar role within a radiological processing/waste handling environment – Essential.
  • Copy editing of others’ work – Essential.
  • Familiar with strict cataloguing, recording and indexing systems – Desirable.
  • Ability to network and liaise to ensure documentation is fit for purpose – Desirable.
  • Experience delivering to tight time and accuracy standards across several projects – Desirable.
  • Planning, organising, and coordinating own work methodically – Desirable.
  • Experience of AWE 804 system – Desirable.
  • Compliance with legal and industry standards, ISO policies (9001, 14001, 18001) – Desirable.
  • Organising own and others’ work to meet time‑frames and schedules – Desirable.

Skills & Abilities

  • Competent user of MS Office – Essential.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own work – Essential.
  • Maintenance of database and physical records – Desirable.
  • Effective communication with colleagues, stakeholders and contractors – Desirable.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001/14001/18001 – Desirable.

Package – Staff only

  • Hours: 37.5 hours per week.
  • Overtime: 37.5–60 hours per week – Time and half; 60+ hours per week or Sundays – Double time.
