Role: Engineering Manager – Full Stack / Java
Location: London (Hybrid – 3 days per week in office)
We are working with a household-name British company that is investing heavily in its engineering function as part of a wider move to become a truly digital-first organisation.
They are building out multiple engineering teams across customer, operational, and retail technology platforms, with a strong focus on engineering quality, scalability, and modern architecture.
As an Engineering Manager, you will lead teams building large-scale, full-stack systems across customer platforms, store operations, NCR-connected retail systems, and distributed backend services.
This is not a hands-off management role. They are looking for Engineering Managers with a strong software engineering background and the technical depth to influence architecture, engineering standards, and system design.
Key Responsibilities
- Leading and mentoring high-performing engineering teams
- Owning delivery across complex full-stack platforms and services
- Driving engineering standards, quality, and best practices
- Supporting architecture and system design decisions across backend and frontend systems
- Partnering closely with Product and Engineering stakeholders
- Helping scale distributed systems and customer-facing applications
- Supporting teams across operational, retail, and transactional platforms
Tech Environment
- Java and Kotlin
- React, Next.js and TypeScript
- GraphQL APIs
- Microservices and distributed systems
- CI/CD, DevOps and modern engineering practices
About You
- Strong background as a hands-on software engineer before moving into management
- Experience leading teams delivering scalable full-stack systems
- Strong Java/Kotlin backend experience combined with broader engineering exposure
- Comfortable working across backend services, frontend applications, APIs, and integrations
- Experience within retail, operational systems, transactional platforms, or customer-facing products would be highly relevant
- Able to lead teams while maintaining strong technical credibility
