Job Title: Lead Design Engineer – Power Systems

Location: Glasgow, SPHQ

Salary: £60,800 – £76,000 per annum (subject to review) + comprehensive benefits program and double‑match pension scheme.

SP Energy Networks is responsible for the transmission of electricity in central and southern Scotland, operating primarily at 400kV, 275kV and 132kV. The Transmission Network team develops, manages and modernises the network through strategies, policies and plans, prioritising safety, security and environmental performance while ensuring economic returns.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Lead development and ownership of long‑term investment plans for the transmission network, including planning up to 400kV and holistic solutions to address load requirements, new onshore and offshore connections, and integration with modernisation plans.
  • Define transmission system requirements, evaluate potential solutions and justify network designs that comply with planning standards such as NETS SQSS, Grid Code and other relevant industry standards.
  • Represent SP Energy Networks with stakeholders and customers to communicate network development, connection capacity and technical/security requirements.
  • Develop and implement investment strategies, policies, system designs and plans in accordance with best practice and legal/licence requirements.
  • Prepare robust engineering need cases and optioneering studies to support regulatory engagement and submissions.
  • Manage risk across the transmission network by leading system plans, designs and policies, identifying and resolving technical issues, evaluating alternatives and proposing innovative solutions.
  • Integrate commercial and technical innovation into policies and plans to maximise value while managing risk.
  • Participate in industry working groups, prepare and review industry and licence documentation such as Future Energy Scenarios (FES), Electricity Ten Year Statement (ETYS) and Network Options Assessment (NOA).

What You’ll Bring

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or relevant experience.
  • Chartered membership of the IET or equivalent, or working towards this.
  • Experience in power system design and analysis or operations.
  • Understanding of GB network design standards (e.g. NETS SQSS, Grid Code) and the operation of the transmission network.
  • Knowledge of SPEN and industry health and safety requirements and compliance.
  • Significant experience of legal and licence obligations, electricity transmission network design philosophy, policies and practices.
  • Understanding of regulatory, technical and commercial frameworks impacting SPEN.
  • Knowledge of industry codes, standards and connection requirements for on‑line and offshore transmission systems.
  • Experience with STC processes and procedures supporting the Electricity System Operator interface, including production of FES, ETYS and NOA documents.
  • Awareness of advanced data processing and analytical methods.
  • Track record of excellent customer service and ability to meet/exceed expectations.
  • Strong influencing, communication and reporting skills for technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Ability to contribute to large‑scale infrastructure investment plans that deliverable and maximise return.
