Principal Civil Engineer
This role focuses on shaping civil functions throughout the lifecycle of water and wastewater projects, from concept design to commissioning.
Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee the design, planning, and execution of civil engineering on projects.
- Provide design support and guidance, ensuring all designs are fit for purpose and comply with current legislation and standards.
- Collaborate closely with commercial, operational, and construction teams to develop efficient, practical and safe solutions throughout design stages, construction and beyond.
- Positively engage with the client, managing relationships and adopting a one‑team approach to support them in achieving their aims.
- Manage interfaces and integrate the civil design with other disciplines, producing comprehensive documentation.
- Act as technical checker on project documents and conduct technical reviews across teams.
- Identify opportunities to improve delivery processes through standard designs, sustainable solutions and digital tools.
- Undertake site reviews to ensure buildability of solutions and integration within existing systems.
- Support the development of the civil engineering team, coaching and mentoring engineers.
Qualifications
- Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Chartered status (CEng) with a relevant Engineering Institution.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in civil engineering, including hydraulic and concrete structure design.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Experience delivering high‑quality outputs that meet design, quality and safety standards.
- Effective communication skills with team members and stakeholders.
- Willingness to travel to sites across your operational region.
- Experience in water/wastewater engineering.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with sustainable design and green building practices.
- Proficiency in civil engineering software and tools.
- Strong understanding of regulatory requirements and industry standards in the water and wastewater sector.
- Experience with temporary works design.
