Project Engineer

Role and Responsibilities

You will be joining a project for a key player in the UK’s power transmission network, a company dedicated to maintaining and upgrading the nation’s critical electricity infrastructure. Their work on high-voltage substations is vital to ensuring a stable and reliable power supply for everyone. In this site‑based Project Engineer role in South Wales you will be working on a 400kV substation and take on a vital supervisory position. Your primary responsibility will be to oversee a team of wiremen during the installation of new protection sub‑racks into existing panels. Day‑to‑day activities will involve managing on‑site works, ensuring all tasks adhere to strict safety standards, interpreting schematic and circuit diagrams, and collaborating effectively with Grid SAPs and commissioning engineers to deliver the project successfully.

Pay

A competitive hourly rate of around £70 per hour is on offer.

Employment type

This is a full‑time freelance role for a fixed term of 2 months. The engagement begins with a two‑week paid familiarisation period from around the 20th of July, followed by five weeks of on‑site work from the 3rd of August to the 4th of September.

Qualifications

  • Grid Competent Person qualification (essential)
  • Proven experience working within Grid HV substations
  • Background in the Power Transmission & Distribution (T&D) sector
  • Ability to confidently read and interpret protection schematic and circuit diagrams
  • Experience in a supervisory role, leading teams of wiremen
  • Strong understanding of risk management for work on live or partially live equipment
  • Familiarity working alongside Grid SAPs and commissioning engineers
