Technical Lead – Senior Infrastructure Engineer
We’re looking for an exceptional Technical Lead – Senior Infrastructure Engineer to help us make a difference to our planet.
As a senior member of the Digital Workplace team, you will define and deliver the technical direction of our digital infrastructure, focusing on Microsoft technologies to support the organization’s evolving requirements.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, configure, and operate infrastructure solutions, ensuring robust, secure, and efficient operation of systems and services in line with Met Office architectural standards.
- Administer and support IT infrastructure, proactively monitoring performance, troubleshooting issues, and implementing improvements to optimise service delivery and minimise downtime.
- Be responsible for ensuring that the Met Office Windows estate is patched and compliance adheres to internal SLAs and security baselines.
- Lead and mentor infrastructure teams, coordinating day‑to‑day activities, allocating tasks, and fostering a culture of technical excellence and knowledge sharing.
- Implement and maintain automation to improve service reliability, compliance and operational efficiency.
- Oversee integration and delivery of infrastructure services, working closely with internal stakeholders and third‑party providers to ensure high‑quality, reliable service outcomes.
- Take ownership of problem management, swiftly addressing incidents and root causes, and applying corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Ensure compliance with information security practices and departmental policies, actively managing risks and adhering to modern development, testing, and operational standards.
- Contribute to the planning and management of technology roadmaps, workforce requirements, and project delivery, supporting the Digital Workplace function’s strategic goals.
- Drive identity and access management practices, including guest access, conditional access, and role-based access control, ensuring alignment with Zero‑Trust principles.
Note: You may be required to participate in a 24/7/365 on‑call roster.

Acts as a senior authority, resolving complex issues while balancing stability, security, and performance in line with DDaT standards and Met Office policies.Provides technical leadership and assurance across services and projects, ensuring solutions are robust, supportable, and aligned to architectural and organizational priorities.
2. Live and Breathe ItExperienced in delivering complex infrastructure change from design through to implementation and handover, with strong insight into modern, cloud‑first and hybrid environments, ensuring services are resilient, secure, and fit for purpose.Effectively manages multiple priorities and projects, maintaining delivery momentum while adapting to evolving business needs.
3. BetterTogether – Communication & Stakeholder ManagementCommunicates complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences. Builds strong relationships across Digital Workplace, security, architecture, service management, and suppliers.Confidently influences technical direction, providing clear recommendations and keeping stakeholders informed and engaged throughout delivery and operational change.
4. BetterTogether – Leadership & Team DevelopmentSupports and develops engineers through mentoring, coaching, and feedback. Provides day‑to‑day technical leadership, assists with prioritisation, and contributes to performance management.Promotes a collaborative and inclusive culture, encouraging shared ownership, continuous learning, and capability development across the team and wider DDaT community.
5. Experts by Nature – Secure and Compliant by DesignOwns infrastructure security and compliance across the Windows estate, ensuring alignment with policies, standards, and regulatory requirements. Maintains high patch compliance, with vulnerabilities remediated within agreed SLAs.Implements and oversees monitoring and remediation processes, driving continuous improvement. Works closely with security and operational teams to embed compliance into daily operations while balancing stability and availability.
