Job Description:

Are you passionate about making a real difference in flood risk management? This is an exciting opportunity to join Cambridgeshire County Council’s Flood Risk Team, where we coordinate the Council’s responsibilities as a Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA). We are looking for a Senior Flood Risk Officer to help enhance the delivery of our LLFA functions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review planning applications to ensure they do not increase flood risk and provide comments to local authorities.
  • Lead investigations into flood incidents and use findings to initiate and manage flood risk management projects.
  • Play a key role in the watercourse consenting and enforcement processes, ensuring compliance with the Land Drainage Act 1991 to protect and maintain watercourses.
  • Investigate flooding incidents to establish whether relevant authorities performed their duties.
  • Investigate potential breaches to the Land Drainage Act 1991 and determine the need for enforcement action.
  • Process and determine applications for consent under the Land Drainage Act 1991.
  • Use project management skills to assist with the development and delivery of flood risk management schemes.

Skills and Experience

  • Strong communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to translate technical information clearly.
  • Ability to work flexibly and effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Confident in holding difficult conversations, balancing technical requirements with sensitivity and professionalism.
  • Experience reviewing planning applications or managing flood risk.
  • Knowledge of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, Land Drainage Act 1991 and Cambridgeshire’s Local Flood Risk Management Strategy.
