A permanent vacancy has arisen within the Estates & Facilities Directorate for an experienced and motivated Estates Manager to join Barts Health NHS Trust. This role is ideal for candidates with a strong Estates Management background who are looking to advance their careers within a highly specialised and supportive hospital environment.
As a key member of the St Bartholomew’s Hospital Estates team, you will lead the strategic and operational management of the building fabric to maintain a safe, compliant, and high-quality environment. While your focus will be the iconic St Bartholomew’s site, balancing modern clinical needs with Grade I listed heritage, you will be part of a larger mission to deliver excellence across one of the UK’s leading healthcare providers.
Main duties of the job
In this vital role, you will oversee the structural integrity and compliance of the hospital’s infrastructure, ensuring the building fabric supports the world-class care provided at the Barts Heart Centre and throughout the site.
- Managing multidisciplinary estates team and specialist contractors to ensure high standards of fabric maintenance, from heritage sash windows to modern roofing systems.
- Ensuring statutory compliance across critical areas, including Fire Door safety (HTM 05-02) and Asbestos Management, acting as an Authorised Person for the Hospital.
- Managing complex fabric projects, including “Regent Street Disease” remediation, drainage overhauls, and security enhancements, while maintaining the hospital’s risk register.
- Coordinating reactive and planned maintenance via CAFM systems to minimise disruption to clinical services and preserve our historic estate.
- Fostering a culture of excellence, providing the training, technical guidance, and business case support your team needs to succeed.

Qualifications
- To have served a recognised apprenticeship and educated to HNC/HND level in a building service, mechanical or electrical engineering discipline or have equivalent experience
- A good working knowledge of Health & Safety principles within engineering and building fabric systems.
- An evidenced knowledge of statutory compliance with all relevant Estates and Engineering systems and building elements.
Experience
- Experience of healthcare building services, maintenance management of multi skilled teams across multiple sites.
- Experience of preventative and reactive maintenance.
- Experience of information systems for the management of maintenance activity (Concept CAFM System).
- Experience of allocating planned and reactive work to the in-house team and contractors. Proven ability to performance manages both work streams.
- Experience of successfully managing a budget and identifying cost savings. Ensuring timely provision of accurate reporting on activity and spending.
- Experience of Financial Instructions in relation to procurement, management, and commissioning of external contracting services.
Knowledge
- Ability to provide expert advice to service end users, on a wide range of Estates management issues.
- Ability to maximise the use of allocated resources in the achievement of set objectives.
- Ability to lead and motivate Estates team. Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines. Able to work on own initiative and within a team.
