The Acute Oncology Management Service is looking for a compassionate, hardworking and committed registered nurse with a wealth of experience in oncology, haematology or emergency care. The hotline service provides 24‑hour access to advice and support for patients within the catchment criteria. The role of the acute oncology nurse advisor is to clinically assess those who are acutely unwell following systemic anti‑cancer treatments, arrange emergency review as necessary and provide advice, support and reassurance to patients and loved ones throughout their cancer journey. Experience in oncology or emergency care is required; triage experience is not, but we are committed to your development. Palliative care and management experience is desirable.
Main duties of the job
Provide telephone triage assessments for calls to the acute oncology management service 24‑hour hotline.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide 24/7 telephone helpline service to enable patients to access expert advice and manage side effects of their treatments.
- Communicate with patients and/or carers, delivering symptom‑management and reassurance.
- Assess patient‑provided information and give appropriate, safe advice on a range of clinical issues.
- Make clinical judgements from caller information, evaluating alternative courses of action.
- Organise workload to ensure all calls are answered promptly.
- Keep accurate, up‑to‑date electronic records.
- Liaise with the multidisciplinary team regarding management of critically ill patients.
- Maintain effective communication with patients, families and the healthcare team to ensure continuity of care.
- Coordinate with the Acute Oncology Management teams at local hospitals.
- Maintain links with specialist nurses, GPs and community nursing teams.
Management and Administration
- Deputise for and support the Acute Oncology Team Leader in managing the service.
- Provide management support for junior team members.
- Plan and implement clinical care, maintain patient records.
- Observe health and safety issues and undertake risk assessments.
- Report and record all accidents and complaints, investigating promptly.
- Adhere to Trust policies and procedures, implementing new ones as needed.
- Report to Department Manager/senior nursing team on unit affairs and staff development.
- Ensure staff participate in personal development plans.
- Assist with nursing recruitment when required.
- Manage short‑ and long‑term sickness/absence collaboratively.
- Review and implement service improvements in line with local and national initiatives.
- Lead team meetings, coordinate shifts, and gather concise information.
- Act as a professional role model and patient advocate, reflecting Trust values.
Operational
- Liaise appropriately regarding bed status and escalations for admission wait times.
- Escalate patient call wait times as appropriate.
- Coordinate and take responsibility for shift running.
- Cross‑cover the Patient Flow team where necessary.
Training & Education
- Complete required clinical skills and mandatory training.
- Participate in research and audit influencing practice.
- Maintain competence in IV training, medicines management, moving & handling, assessment of critically ill patients, and basic life support.
- Attend all mandatory study days.
- Stay abreast of national and regional initiatives and implement them.
- Act as a link nurse, supporting the team per manager instruction.
