Project Supervisors
Location: Kemble.
Department: Fieldwork.
Salary: £32,977 – £35,665 (dependent on experience).
Permanent contracts, subject to successful completion of a 6‑month probationary period.
Role: Lead specified fieldwork projects and supervise smaller‑to‑medium sized projects.
Reporting to: Project Officer.
Job Description
To lead specified fieldwork projects, ensuring performance targets are met, and assuring the quality of archaeological recording and understanding.
- Deliver own fieldwork projects to time, budget, quality and health and safety requirements.
- Assist in the development of archaeologists and trainees through regular performance reviews, coaching and providing toolbox talks.
- Authorship of typescript fieldwork reports efficiently and accurately.
- Provide regular reports to project managers on progress (budgetary and archaeological), logistical and health & safety matters, and maintain liaison with clients, local government officers and contractors.
- Ensure accurate completion of administrative records, including timesheets, plant and allocation sheets.
- Assist project officers with the supervision of larger fieldwork projects, deputising when appropriate.
- Ensure effective deployment, maintenance and care of vehicles, plant and equipment and maintain accurate records of accidents, damage and malfunctions.
- Ensure fieldwork is carried out in accordance with the health & safety policy, preparing risk assessments and related documentation.
- Assist project managers in pre‑project planning and preparation, including scheme of investigation, trench plans, service information, notification of utility companies and landowners.
- Contribute to departmental processes via learning reports and feedback to committee representatives.
- Undertake additional duties appropriate to the role as required.
Personal Specification
Essential
- Sound knowledge of archaeological practice and familiarity with the archaeology of Britain across all periods.
- Experience supervising small to medium fieldwork projects, including evaluations and excavations.
- Ability to author typescript fieldwork reports efficiently and accurately.
- Ability to organise, motivate, train, appraise and direct staff.
- Good working knowledge of health & safety requirements and relevant legislation.
- Effective communication skills with sponsors, clients, officers of other bodies and the public.
- Administrative competence, keeping accurate records, accounts and submitting reports.
- Full manual driving licence.
- Basic competence in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Competent in providing first aid.
Desirable
- Demonstrable potential for stratigraphic analysis and post‑excavation reporting.
- Survey skills, including operation of Leica GPS/TST and basic knowledge of CAD.
- Experience driving 4×4 vehicles, vans and minibuses.
- Possession of a current CSCS Health & Safety Card or recent test pass.
- Membership of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA).
