Job overview

The successful postholder will work in the largest Neurogastroenterology unit in the country alongside a diverse team of specialists, including dietitians, GI surgeons, and mental health professionals, to provide holistic, patient-centred care. The role is part of the Neurogastroenterology Fellow, a specialised clinician bridging general gastroenterology and expert-level motility diagnostics. The primary purpose is to provide comprehensive care for patients with complex functional and motility disorders through high-volume outpatient clinics and the expert delivery of advanced physiological testing—including Alimetry, Oesophageal Manometry, Bravo, and Anorectal Physiology. By maintaining procedural independence in diagnostic upper and lower GI endoscopy and actively driving clinical governance, research, and service improvement, the Fellow ensures evidence-based, patient‑centred care while advancing the department’s diagnostic capabilities and academic standing.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide gastroenterological expertise in both upper and lower GI motility disorders and disorders of gut‑brain interaction.
  • Operate within the clinical governance and audit framework within the division.
  • Attend weekly multidisciplinary team meetings, departmental clinical governance meetings, journal club, and weekly seminars.
  • Participate in audit, clinical governance, service development, and annual appraisal.
  • Collaborate with the division to achieve all access to treatment waiting time targets.
  • Deliver specialist GI physiology clinics and procedure clinics, relevant diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures and general gastroenterology clinics.
  • Engage in department audit and service development programmes.

Person specification

Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise.
  • Part II MRCP or equivalent.
  • GCP training by time of appointment.

Experience

  • Training in Gastroenterology (Post CCT).
  • Experience of and interest in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Experience of GI physiology investigations.
  • Experience in management of neurogastro patients and motility disorders.
  • Experience of clinical trials and/or research.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work with MDT.
  • Clinical audit experience.
  • Commitment to delivering high quality clinical research.
  • Previous experience with EPIC.
  • Performing GI physiology investigations independently.Therapeutic endoscopy.

Communication

  • Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligence in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to build rapport, listen, persuade, and negotiate.
