Principal Highway Drainage Engineer – Highways Team, Transportation
We are looking for an experienced drainage engineer to join our Highways team, responsible for the full lifecycle delivery of transportation projects across the UK.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver full lifecycle projects to improve our transport network, including feasibility, concept, preliminary and detailed design, community engagement, project delivery and construction management services.
- Oversee the appointment of competent drainage engineers, develop engineering tasks, define scope, select problems for investigation and develop novel approaches.
- Provide technical drainage knowledge and expertise to the design team across all project phases.
- Ensure quality, deliver feasibility, preliminary and detailed drainage designs, and provide specialist technical contributions as required.
- Lead a multi‑disciplinary engineering team to deliver integrated designs, build effective relationships with clients and technical teams, and meet quality standards, budgets and timelines.
- Fulfil all health and safety responsibilities in design, including safety in design, CDM, and university of occupational safety standards.
- Design highway drainage systems in accordance with UK standards, including DMRB and MCHW.
- Use drainage modelling software and manual techniques where appropriate.
- Create 3D BIM models of projects.
- Check drainage designs completed by others.
- Collaborate with colleagues and clients using Business Collaborator and ProjectWise for information sharing.
- Identify data and information required for projects and advise team leaders.
- Supervise and mentor junior team members.
- Prepare technical reports.
- Manage financial and programme constraints, monitoring hours against the project budget.
- Encourage knowledge sharing, innovation and creativity.
- Complete required health and safety training, including CSCS qualification where required.
- Build strong working relationships with internal teams across business lines such as Planning, Streets, Structures, Infrastructure, Water, Power, Landscape.
- Support marketing and business development objectives locally and nationally.
Key Qualifications
- Degree in Civil Engineering.
- Chartered or incorporated engineer (required to sign off drainage designs for NH CG502).
- Minimum 5 years of post‑graduation experience in highway drainage design in the UK.
- Competent in the use of highway drainage design software.
- Demonstrable understanding of Health and Safety, including CDM.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Design Manual for Roads and Bridges drainage standards.
