The University of Glasgow is seeking to appoint an outstanding Equine Surgeon to join Glasgow Equine Hospital, one of the UK’s leading centres for equine clinical care, teaching, and research.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic, collaborative team delivering a high-quality equine referral service. The successful candidate will contribute to a busy and varied caseload, working at the forefront of equine surgery while supporting veterinary surgeons across Scotland and northern England.

About the Role

As a member of our expert equine surgery team, you will deliver high‑quality specialist clinical services within the RCVS‑accredited Glasgow Equine Veterinary Hospital, while contributing to research‑led education and the development of our expanding equine academic programmes. For candidates with particular expertise or enthusiasm, there is scope to develop and expand specialist clinical services, including areas such as equine dentistry and head and neck surgery.

The Glasgow Equine Hospital delivers a comprehensive equine referral service, working closely with first‑opinion practices to provide advanced diagnostics, surgical intervention, and intensive care. This is complemented by an integrated ambulatory practice, providing high‑quality 24‑hour veterinary care to the local equine community and creating a broad and rewarding clinical environment.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Below are the key requirements for the role.

Knowledge and Qualifications

  • A1 Veterinary degree registerable with RCVS.
  • A2 Appropriate postgraduate specialist clinical qualification in equine surgery (e.g.) or allied discipline (e.g.) that would allow the individual to register as an RCVS Specialist. DipECVS, DipACVS, RCVS diploma, FANZCVS.
  • B1 Masters, PhD (or other evidence of research training).
  • B2 Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or equivalent teaching qualification.

Skills

  • C1 Expertise across the field, corresponding to training and qualifications, and ability to provide expert advice to clinicians, external veterinary surgeons, research bodies and organisations.
  • C2 High standard of communication skills both orally and written.
  • C3 Self‑motivated, able to plan for contingencies and think strategically.
  • C4 Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • C5 Ability to accept collegiate responsibilities and act accordingly.
  • C6 High standard of presentation skills.
  • C7 Proven leadership and motivational ability in teaching and the ability to actively lead clinical team(s) as appropriate.
  • D1 Understanding and experience of statistics, databases and other IT applications/packages.

Experience

  • E1 Extensive post‑diploma experience in an equine surgical speciality.
  • E2 Teaching experience relevant to the HE sector.
  • E3 A track record of clinical research publications.
  • E4 An established reputation as an advanced clinician in an equine surgical speciality and a major contributor to the treatment and management of diseases in this field.
  • E5 Proven experience of management of clinical service.
  • E6 An established reputation in clinical research and a major contributor in the small animal medical disciplines.
  • F1 Successful supervision/career development of post‑graduate students studying for clinical diplomas.
  • F2 Record of award of competitive grant funding for clinical research.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7/8/9, £41,064 – £46,049/£50,253 – £58,225/£59,966 – £67,468 per annum plus a clinical supplement and out‑of‑hours allowance.
