Job Description:

We are building the next generation dynamic, scalable, and resilient fulfilment platform for Tesco and need a Backend Engineer (SDE2) to develop robust, scalable backend services that optimise fulfilment operations across all customer order fulfilment locations.

Responsibilities

  • Build scalable, resilient Java‑based backend services, APIs, and microservices to support fulfilment workflows and systems.
  • Implement and ship end‑to‑end stories, primarily focused on frontend with some backend integration.
  • Take ownership of medium‑sized features and participate in their design and delivery.
  • Work closely with engineers, product managers, and stakeholders to understand problems and propose solutions.
  • Write clean, maintainable code and contribute to peer reviews to raise the team’s quality bar.
  • Help onboard junior engineers and share knowledge across the team.
  • Apply best practices and contribute to improving development processes and standards.
  • Support and maintain services end‑to‑end from development to production support.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience of having done product development using agile methodologies.
  • Hands‑on experience building and supporting reliable and operationally robust distributed Java applications/products.
  • Any previous experience contributing in a globally distributed software engineering team is a big plus.
  • Demonstrated impact across a software engineering team.
  • Experience designing, developing, and operating backend components or services.
  • Exposure to agile methodologies and DevOps practices.
  • Ability to support and collaborate with other engineers.

Tech Stack

  • Backend: Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, PostgreSQL, Couchbase, RESTful APIs.
  • DevOps: CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions), Docker, Kubernetes.
  • Cloud: Azure.
  • Practices: TDD, clean code, automation, performance optimisation.
