Job overview

We are looking for a substantive 8a Clinical Psychologist for 15 hours per week, to join our specialist children’s Neurodevelopmental Assessment Service covering Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset .

You will be joining the Emotional Behavioural Wellbeing team – with a particular focus on complex Autism and ADHD assessments. Formulation and differential diagnosis will be key parts of this role, so the post-holder will have knowledge and experience of neurodivergence, mental health and trauma.

There will be the option of working from home for part of the week and some flexibility in working pattern to fit around the post holder’s personal responsibilities. You will receive regular supervision and line management from a Clinical Psychologist, with opportunities for reflective practice and protected time and funds for CPD.

The successful applicant will be working predominantly from Osprey Court (South Bristol), but will also need to travel to other clinical bases in the region, as well as schools and family homes.

Main duties of the job

This post would suit someone who enjoys providing complex assessment and formulation to children, young people and families. It is an exciting opportunity to work within a multi-disciplinary team alongside Speech and Language Therapists, Community Paediatricians and specialist Nurses. The role will involve working with high levels of family distress, mental health difficulties, and a range of risk type behaviours.

The post holder will oversee the delivery of clinical psychology aspects of a high – quality assessment service for children and young people, by supporting the delivery of this service across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.

The role involves clinical authority for psychological aspects of pathways, clinical governance and risk management processes, ensuring that the service is rooted in evidence‑based psychological practice.

It will involve highly specialist assessments of children (including those presenting in early years) and young people with complex social communication difficulties as part of a multi professional assessment team. A key part will be offering formulations, advice and consultation to multi professional colleagues in the assessment of autism and ADHD, and differential diagnosis in complex cases.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • Doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or equivalent)
  • ADOS-2 and/or ADI-r trained

Experience

  • Experience of working with children and young people across the age range, with a range of complex neurodivergent needs, presenting with a wide range of psychological problems
  • Evidence of supporting and/or leading on an area of service development
  • Experience of supervising psychologists, assistant psychologists and trainee psychologists, having completed training for clinical supervision

Skills

  • Evidence of developing own interests and skills in one or two specialist areas (relevant to working with neurodivergent children and young people)

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
