Specialty Doctor – Clinical Haematology

Here is an exciting opportunity for you to join our friendly pathology team as a Specialty doctor – clinical hematology. This is an ideal role for a candidate with an excellent background in clinical haematology. You will work alongside one Trainee Specialty Registrar (ST3+) and one other Specialty Doctor in haematology and would be responsible for care of in‑patients admitted under the haematology team and also provide medical cover for the Haemato‑oncology infusion unit and chemotherapy day unit in order to review and manage unwell patients on transfusion/chemotherapy.
Main duties of the job
- Provide advice to doctors from other specialties and general practitioners in the management of haematological problems.
- Regularly attend out‑patient clinics, including the weekly lymphoma clinic, and perform bone marrow biopsies.
- Undertake chemotherapy prescription and administration of intrathecal chemotherapy after successful completion of trust‑approved training.
- Report blood films and bone marrow aspirates under the close supervision of Consultant Haematologists.

Job responsibilities
The clinical service in Southend is predominantly malignant haematology, seeing a typical population of lymphomas (100 new cases per annum) and myelomas (26 cases per annum) as examples. There is the expected general haematology workload given our local catchment population of 380,000. There is a busy anticoagulant service (managed by pharmacists); acute leukaemia is managed in liaison with Barts Health NHS Trust and shared care is delivered when feasible.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- GMC registration
- MBBS or equivalent
- 4 years ST experience including 2 years within Haematology
- MRCP
Experience
- 2 years hospital experience within Clinical Haematology
- Management of clinics
- Worked within NHS in a haematology environment
Teaching
- Ability to teach clinical skills
- Knowledge and experience of supervising undergraduates, junior doctors and other staff
Research & Audit
- Knowledge of the principles of research/audit and ability to interpret and apply clinical research.
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems
- Recent published clinical research in a peer‑reviewed journal
- Ability to supervise postgraduate research
