Hospice Specialty Doctor (Palliative Medicine)

As a Hospice Specialty Doctor, you will play a crucial role in ensuring patients with life‑limiting illnesses receive the highest standards of specialist palliative care. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering expert clinical care to inpatients.
  • Working closely with a highly skilled multidisciplinary team to support patients and their families.
  • Contributing to the education and development of local GP trainees and medical students, enhancing their understanding of palliative care.
  • Gaining valuable experience in a setting that encourages professional development and career progression.

Main duties of the job

We want you to have:

  • Full GMC registration
  • A minimum of 2 years clinical experience in relevant specialties
  • An interest in palliative medicine
  • Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team

A postgraduate qualification and previous relevant experience are desirable.

We work closely with West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, Wakefield District Health & Care Partnership, Wakefield Hospice, and other key partners to deliver high‑quality, integrated palliative care. Our highly specialised team actively contributes to research and education, helping to shape the future of palliative medicine.

Job responsibilities

Location: The Prince of Wales Hospice, Pontefract, WF8 4BG

Hours: Average of 19.2 hours per week, including 16 hours per week (4 sessions), requirement to work 1 in 5 weekends (average 3.2 hours a week), and requirement to cover 1 night on call per week plus on‑call relating to weekend cover.

Salary: £47,443 – £82,750 per annum (FTE) plus additional night on‑call allowance of £7,723 per annum. Actual pay: £22,773 – £39,720 per annum plus on‑call allowance of £7,723 per annum.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Specific interest in palliative medicine
  • 2 years of experience in relevant specialties
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working
  • Ability and experience of assessing patients holistically
  • Experience of undergraduate teaching and teaching allied health professionals
  • Previous post in palliative medicine

Knowledge

  • Shows some knowledge of national drivers in palliative medicine development
  • Demonstrates breadth of knowledge and awareness in clinical practice
  • Understands the importance of audit and research in maintaining up to date clinical practice
  • Demonstrates personal involvement in auditDemonstrates use of evidence based practice
  • Competency with venipuncture and venflon insertion

Qualifications / Training

  • Full GMC Registration
  • MBChB / MBBS
  • Diploma in palliative medicine
  • Completion of teaching course

Skills / Abilities

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team (doctors and multidisciplinary)
  • Ability to prioritise work
  • Excellent communication skills (patients, families and other team members)
  • Advanced communication skills training
