Job Description
JR PAT Testing is an expanding PAT and Compliance Company currently looking for engineers to join our team in Durham.
We offer self-employed positions with flexible hours, allowing interested individuals to work either part-time or full-time. Although we understand that some may travel further afield, we require that all applicants have a reasonable commuting distance of Durham or closer.
This role offers potential earnings on a pro‑rated basis depending on the rate per appliance, the number of tests and job dynamics. Our jobs range from one-day projects to long-term contracts.
To perform the role you must have your own transport, equipment calibrated annually, hold a City & Guilds 2377 PAT qualification or equivalent, be reliable, honest, and have a “can‑do” attitude. All necessary equipment including testing instruments, measuring devices, and additional tools must be kept up-to-date and meet the relevant regulations.

Typical Day
As a Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) engineer, you’ll start the day by packing tools and equipment into the van, then travel to the first client site. You will test appliances such as microwaves, kettles, and computers, using appropriate test instruments. You must inform users of results and advise on safety or repair actions.
After completing testing, you will record findings in a PAT test report—paper or electronic—and provide completion certificates and checklists to the employer.
The role involves constant travel, either alone or with a team, requiring strong organization and accuracy. It is physically and mentally demanding but offers variety and opportunities for advancement.
