A Typical Day of a Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) Engineer
As a PAT engineer, no two days are the same. From hospitals to retail outlets, you’ll work in a variety of locations and environments.
A typical day starts with packing up all the necessary tools and equipment – testers, record books, and any other devices – into the van before setting off to the first job.
On site, you conduct tests on appliances such as microwaves, kettles and computers to determine if they are safe for use. You then inform users of the results and explain why certain appliances may be unfit for use.
Once all testing is complete, you record your findings in a dedicated PAT test report book or an electronic system and provide employers with a copy. You may also need to complete additional paperwork such as completion certificates and checklists.
Throughout the day you’ll be constantly on the move from one location to another – either alone or as part of a team. Staying organised and ensuring accurate, efficient completion of tests is essential.
It takes skill, experience and patience to be successful in this role, but the rewards are great. As a PAT testing engineer, you help keep workplaces safe while developing your own knowledge and expertise.
Overall, PAT testing is an exciting job that is physically and mentally demanding. It offers variety and opportunities for advancement – a rewarding challenge for those looking for the next step in their career.
