A typical day of a Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) engineer

As a PAT engineer, no two days are the same. From hospitals to retail outlets, you’ll visit various locations and environments. A typical day starts with packing all necessary tools and equipment – including testers and record books – into your van before setting off to the first job.

Once on site, you’ll test appliances such as microwaves, kettles, and computers. This involves using test instruments to verify that electrical items are safe for continued use or to determine if they need replacement or repair. You’ll inform users of results and explain why certain appliances may be unfit for use.

After testing, you record findings in a PAT test report book or electronic system and provide employers with a copy. Additional paperwork, such as completion certificates and checklists, may also need to be filled out.

Throughout the day you’ll move from one location to another – either alone or with a team – staying organised to ensure all tests are completed accurately and efficiently. The role demands skill, experience, and patience, but the rewards are substantial, as you help keep workplaces safe while developing your own expertise.
