Structural Geologist

Company: Amentum
Apply for the Structural Geologist
Location: East Hagbourne
Job Description:

About the Opportunity

Amentum provides client-oriented solutions across our environment, energy, and defence businesses. With a strong order book and a diverse, exciting portfolio of projects across the UK and internationally, we need to expand our team of geoscience and environmental specialists across multiple disciplines required to deliver a project lifecycle—from new build and operations through to decommissioning and site end use. We offer opportunities for significant career advancement, attractive remuneration, and flexible working, as well as leadership and client relationship role development.

We are seeking an experienced Structural Geologist with 6+ years industry experience to join our team. The successful candidate will apply advanced structural interpretation, modelling and geomechanics skills to support projects within the Earth and Environmental Services Operations Area, as part of our Energy & Environment International business.

As an experienced geoscientist, with key skills in structural geology and geomechanics, you will be working within a multidisciplinary team with specialities in low strength sedimentary rock, high strength rock and Quaternary geology, and on projects with associated disciplines ranging from hydrogeology, land quality, geotechnical engineering, engineering geology and geophysics. Much of the work we undertake involves siting, site characterisation, site descriptive models and understanding subsurface conditions relevant to a range of end uses from new build nuclear power, defence facilities, radioactive waste disposal through to clean energy solutions. Decommissioning and regeneration of legacy sites, repurposing for alternative use may also be a focus of your work. We maintain strong links and regularly work with academic researchers around the UK.

In addition, you will be encouraged to work with the wider Amentum community to further strengthen the team’s capabilities. As this is a senior role you will be expected to provide guidance and mentorship to junior staff whilst providing project technical leadership within our Subsurface Solutions team. You will also gain experience in complex bid preparation, project management and technical planning. As a result, we are looking for people who have the passion and drive to be involved with challenging projects with strong adaptability, prioritisation and teamworking skills, and a willingness to share your knowledge along the way.

We would be interested in hearing from candidates, who alongside strong structural geology skills, have an interest in, or experience in, carbon capture and storage (CCS) and geothermal energy, which could compliment future growth opportunities.

This is a great opportunity to showcase your sound technical skills whilst working in a diverse, engaging, and collaborative team. You will work with comprehensive and high-resolution datasets, both legacy and recent, to provide technical solutions for clients. This will include geological (e.g. excavations, boreholes, core and outcrop), hydrogeological, geotechnical, and geophysical data (e.g. 2D/3D seismic reflection and refraction data, and wireline), with complex or even bespoke laboratory testing regimes to support the above. You will integrate and interpret these datasets as input to conceptual geological, hydrogeological and engineering models. In addition, you will be involved in research activities around themes including but not limited to engineering and hydrogeological properties, and gas transport paths through geological materials.

There are significant expectations over the next thirty years concerning the siting of facilities for new nuclear builds, the need for geological disposal of wastes, as well as continuing geoscience characterisation at existing licensed sites to support on‑going operations. This role, within an expanding team, will support our strategic positioning in multiple sectors and support delivery of current and future projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct structural analysis and fault mapping using geophysical, borehole, and field data and integrate with other datasets to support subsurface evaluations.
  • Develop structural and numerical geomechanical models to assess stress regimes, fault stability, and fracture networks.
  • Provide technical input on a range of projects. Successful candidates will not work exclusively as a structural geologist but will be expected to show a flexible approach and apply their broad geological knowledge in support of a range of projects.
  • Work within multidisciplinary teams to apply, and where necessary, develop new approaches to data review, interpretation, integration and model development.
  • Develop an understanding of the underlying requirements of our clients, and how we can meet those requirements.
  • Produce concise and well‑written technical reports and present interpretations, recommendations and results to clients.
  • Supervise one to two junior staff members while leading own small to medium scale projects with support from the team leader.
  • Mentor junior geoscientists and contribute to technical knowledge sharing.
  • Undertake data quality and uncertainty assessments.
  • Business development: contribute to proposals and bids, identifying opportunities to expand our business and strengthen client relationships.
  • Develop your existing industry and academia obtained skillsets in relevant areas such as geology, geotechnics, structural geology or geophysics and apply these in support of radioactive waste disposal and other decommissioning focused investigation and research areas.

Experience & Qualifications

  • MSc or PhD in Geology, Structural Geology, or related discipline.
  • You will be an experienced geologist, or geophysicist, with 6+ years of experience in structural interpretation and geomechanical modelling within nuclear waste, mining, oil & gas or related sectors.
  • Proficiency in industry‑standard software (e.g. S&P Kingdom, Petrel, FLAC3D, Move, or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of tectonics, fault systems and fault mapping.
  • Understanding of the measurement and modelling of stresses, fracture mechanics and related parameters.
  • You will have a good understanding of capable fault characterisation and will contribute to the development and review of fault models, assess seismic sources, and integrate geological and geophysical data into hazard assessments.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • You will have the ability to lead activities that help develop conceptual models of geological materials, including engineering aspects relating to hydrogeological and gas pathways.
  • Ability to manage time and priorities while working on several varied projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including tailoring outputs to the requirements of different stakeholders.
  • Experience of undertaking site/field works where required.
  • Ability to autonomously develop critically thought‑out solutions and bring work scopes to the team, including the ability to show/communicate critical thinking in assessing other solutions.
  • You will have experience in site characterisation and can advise on identifying and managing uncertainty and practical constraints in site characterisation.
  • The ability and focus to identify your own developmental and career goals and to take steps to achieve them, with support from your line manager.
  • HSE Focus: Strong commitment to health, safety, and environmental excellence.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites across the UK and overseas when required, and hold a valid UK driving licence.
