About the role

An opportunity has arisen for a Mobile Technician within the Wheelchair, Delivery, Repair and Refurbishment Service (WDRRS). The service is based at the Community Equipment Service Store, Peffermill, Edinburgh, and is part of the SMART (Southeast Mobility and Rehabilitation Technology) Services, Astley Ainslie Hospital, Edinburgh. The SMART Centre (www.smart.scot.nhs.uk) provides highly specialised clinical rehabilitation technology services, including the Wheelchair and Seating Service, across the southeast of Scotland.

Responsibilities

The post holder will undertake repairs and maintenance of manual and powered wheelchairs and children’s buggies either at the workplace or in the community depending on service need. The post holder will also provide cover for other members of the service, such as the stores and workshop staff, as required.

The post holder will work to the service’s standard operating procedures and NHS Lothian’s policies and procedures, including all Health & Safety requirements.

Working hours and contract

This is a permanent, part-time post for 21.6 hours over three full week days (service is open to days that suit the successful candidate).

As from 1 st April 2026, the Agenda for Change full‑time working week will be reducing from 37 to 36 hours per week. Part‑time hours will be reduced pro‑rata. However, there will be a corresponding increase in the hourly rate so that pay will not be affected.

Eligibility and requirements

  • To work in the United Kingdom, there is a legal requirement for an individual to demonstrate that they have the relevant permission to work in the country.
  • Depending on the post, a different level of criminal records check may be required. If the post is assessed as a ‘regulated role’, the appointment will be subject to joining the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme.
