Are you passionate about tackling climate change and making a positive impact on the environment? Our ambitious five-year programme, featuring over 5,000 innovative projects, is dedicated to overcoming the challenges of delivering exceptional water and waste services. With our dedicated in‑house design team, we are set to achieve outstanding results and make a significant impact.
About The Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Design Engineer (Mechanical, Civil or Process). The role will be based in Raynesway (Derby) and will sit within our expanding major projects and bioresearch waste treatment design team. The Design Team uses technical skills to shape wastewater strategies for the company, providing expert advice to lead projects from feasibility to detailed design.
You will work with stakeholders, consultants and contractors to protect and enhance the quality of our waste‑treatment assets and rivers; interrogate and improve our data systems; undertake investigations and outline designs so that we have the best evidence available for decision‑making.
Key Responsibilities
- Sewage treatment assets: understand existing assets, complete risk assessments, and undertake outline designs for new assets to meet new business needs and short‑to‑long‑term complex investigations.
- Develop strategies to enhance existing assets and inform price‑review regulatory submissions; collaborate across the business as we build our river‑quality, sustainability and net‑zero carbon plans, influencing the business to transition away from traditional investment routes.
- Carry out self‑led research on emerging technologies to define new innovative treatment options and collaborate internally and externally to promote new strategies.
- Promote our ongoing waste‑treatment capital maintenance programme; ensure robust evidence‑based understanding of how our sites work to maintain final effluent quality.
- Provide tactical support and advice to operational teams to maintain availability and quality of our waste‑treatment services for customers.
- Ensure Health and Safety are built into the lifecycle of the design.
- Understand and review potential delivery and operational risks, e.g., H&S, environmental, commissioning through the design process.
What You’ll Bring
You’ll be degree qualified (desirable) and showing your professional commitment as a member of one of the engineering institutions or actively working towards incorporated or chartered status, a journey we are keen to support. A water‑industry background would be great but not essential; an engineering discipline is required.
You will have excellent internal and external stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build relationships with a diverse range of people. You will be forward‑thinking, capable of anticipating challenges and responding to change in a rapidly evolving environment. A full UK driving licence will be required.
We value character, positivity and a caring attitude in equal weight.
