Overview

The Guardian Foundation is an independent charity whose purpose is to promote global press freedom and access to liberal journalism. Our vision is a world where people have access to reliable information, from a diverse range of sources, strengthening their ability to hold power to account. The Foundation owns the Guardian News & Media (GNM) Archive, the repository for the records of the Guardian and Observer newspapers. We are looking for a Head of Archive (10 month FTC) to oversee the professional management and care of the GNM Archive, and the provision of access to colleagues and other users, during a period of maternity leave. We’re looking for someone with proven experience in a similar role, who enjoys working autonomously, with an interest in and knowledge of modern history and current affairs.

This post is part-time (3 days a week) and is likely to be partially based in our office in London and partially working from home. The salary range is £42,000-46,000 pro rata.

Ideally we would like the successful candidate to join us in early December 2024.

Responsibilities

  • Archive management including acquisitions, appraisal, cataloguing, preservation, access and outreach
  • Answering internal and external enquiries relating to the archive collections and history of the paper and hosting visits from researchers
  • Line management of the Archivist and supervision of volunteers and work experience students
  • Management of the Calm database and digital repository
  • Maintenance of the archive’s websites and online catalogue (Calmview)
  • Organising loans for exhibitions
  • Responsibility for the archive budget and ordering of archive supplies
  • Giving talks and tours relating to the archive and the history of the newspapers
  • Ensuring correct environmental conditions and security in the archive stores
  • Programme evaluation and impact reporting including the preparation of statistics and reports for the Guardian Foundation
  • Programme planning for the archive, along with the Director of Programmes and Executive Director

Requirements / Candidate Profile

  • Proven experience in a similar role with autonomous working habits
  • Interest in and knowledge of modern history and current affairs
  • Ability to manage staff and volunteers, and coordinate with internal teams
  • Experience with archive management systems and digital repositories
  • Good communication skills for providing access and hosting researchers
