Job overview

The Trust is seeking to appoint a full‑time (10 PA) acute on‑call Consultant Paediatrician with an interest/expertise in Oncology. The post holder must have a minimum of 6 months paediatric oncology experience as a registrar at a primary treatment centre (PTC). A spin in oncology will be an advantage.

Your main base will be the Royal Surrey Hospital, but as part of our group model with Ashford and St Peter’s, there will be cross‑cover with their patients and you will be expected to attend the joint MDTs, business and governance meetings.

The medical team will provide 5 day morning cover (Monday to Friday) and see and manage all of the oncology inpatients, prescribe electronically chemotherapy and supervise the delivery of day‑case chemotherapy on the day unit/inpatient ward.

You must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a licence to practice and be on the Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of attaining your CCT or equivalent at the interview stage.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant will be expected to work with the Clinical Director in Paediatrics and other Consultants to promote the highest standards in paediatric medical care. They will be expected to:

  • Be enthusiastic to develop the service and promote improved multi‑disciplinary and multi‑agency services for children
  • Promote the team approach to children’s care, having due regard for the linking of acute, community, social, education and voluntary services
  • Partake in Consultant appraisal and revalidation
  • Prior agreement to undertake any Supporting Professional Agreement activities elsewhere must be obtained from the Clinical Director
  • Be the lead Local Paediatric Consultant for Oncology with the help of the tertiary centre
  • Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (regular student placements from the Universities of Surrey, Southampton and Physicians Associates)
  • Work in a mixture of outpatient and inpatient activity, with opportunity for working within the group model with Ashford and St. Peters hospital; consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work less than full‑time or in a job‑share capacity

Qualifications

  • Full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Paediatrics (or relevant specialty) via CCT or Portfolio Pathway
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Provider status in APLS/EPLS and NLS or equivalent, or willingness to obtain within 6 months of interview date
  • Higher medical qualification
  • Teaching/Education Qualification
  • Qualification in leadership and/or clinical management

Training

  • Valid BLS Training

Experience

  • Paediatric oncology experience as a registrar at a primary treatment centre (PTC)
  • Broad general Paediatric experience
  • Significant evidence of experience in clinical leadership
  • NHS experience
  • Experience of research
  • Community child health and UK experience
