Job Description:

Holographic Augmented Reality R&D — Prototyping & Optics

Full-time | Open to all career stages | Salary by experience

About the role

We are a small, fast-moving holography R&D company developing augmented reality solutions at the frontier of holography. Our team of around 40 — physicists, chemists, and engineers — works across all aspects of prototyping, from early concept through to client-ready demonstrators.

Because our work is client-driven, no two projects are alike. We need a hands-on mechanical engineer who thrives on variety and is motivated to deliver real, high-quality results on time. You will work across design, fabrication, and lab integration. Since we do not have a dedicated technician, you will own the full breadth of your work — from the CAD model to the finished assembly.

No prior holography experience is needed. We will provide a full introductory course in optics and holography, along with any other training required as you grow into the role.

What you'll be doing

• Design and iterate fixturing systems in CAD for 3D printing and CNC

• Operate and maintain 3D printers, water jet cutters, laser engravers, and general workshop tools

• Design and build precision optomechanical systems in the laboratory

• Design and build head-worn AR demonstrators for client showcases

• Take measurements and conduct experiments with care and precision

• Write clear reports and liaise directly with clients

Required skills and experience

• CAD proficiency — SolidWorks preferred

• Basic workshop skills and strong practical ability

• Excellent attention to detail; comfortable with high-precision work and tolerancing

• 3D printing — design for printing, operating and maintaining printers

Bonus skills (not essential)

• Python scripting

• Automation experience

• Experience in optics

What we're looking for in you

We care as much about how you work as what you know. The ideal candidate:

• Is driven by results and team outcomes — you care about delivery, not personal glory, and you default to sharing knowledge and working through problems with the team

• Takes personal accountability — you own your work, its quality, and what you do when something does not go to plan

• Is flexible and broad in their approach — equally comfortable maintaining a printer, drawing up a precision jig, or sitting in a client meeting

• Combines curiosity with rigour — you love a good technical challenge, but you are motivated by finding the right working solution, not just the most interesting problem.

About the team

We are a team of approximately 40 research staff — primarily physicists, chemists, and engineers. The work is varied and fast-paced, shaped by the needs of our clients. There is no engineering technician to hand work on to, so the scope of this role is wide. That said, you will never be without support — we are a collaborative team who share knowledge openly.

Salary & career stage

We welcome applications from candidates at any stage of their engineering career, from recent graduates to experienced professionals. Salary will be agreed based on experience and discussed at interview.
