Role Overview

We are seeking a talented Design Engineer to play a key role in the design and development of bespoke hydraulic systems.

You will be responsible for translating customer requirements into fully engineered, manufacturable solutions, supporting projects across the full lifecycle from initial concept through to production, testing, and final delivery.

This is a technically focused role with opportunities to influence design standards and support the wider engineering team.

Key Information

  • Location: Heckmondwike
  • Reporting to: Senior Design Engineer
  • Travel: Occasional UK and international travel to customer sites

Working Hours:

Monday–Thursday: 8:00am – 4:30pm

Friday: 8:00am – 2:30pm

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of bespoke hydraulic systems, including power units, manifolds, valve blocks, and integrated assemblies.
  • Interpret customer specifications and translate them into detailed engineering designs.
  • Produce 3D models, technical drawings, schematics, and Bills of Materials using CAD software.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant standards, safety requirements, and customer expectations.
  • Perform engineering calculations to validate system performance and integrity.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, assembly, and test teams to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Support projects throughout the full lifecycle, including installation and commissioning.
  • Liaise with customers, suppliers, and internal teams to resolve technical challenges.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and product development.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience in hydraulic system design (e.g. power units, manifolds, valve blocks)
  • Strong mechanical engineering background within a manufacturing environment
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD or similar)
  • Ability to produce detailed engineering drawings and technical documentation
  • Solid understanding of hydraulic principles and fluid power systems
  • Experience working from customer specification through to production release
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and Design for Manufacture (DfM) principles
  • Strong problem-solving skills with high attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines

Desirable

  • HNC/HND or Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or a related discipline)
  • Experience in regulated or high-integrity sectors (e.g. defence, nuclear, oil & gas, renewables)
  • Working towards or holding Chartered Engineer (CEng) status
