Senior Payroll Officer
Location: St Joseph’s Specialist Trust, Cranleigh, Surrey. Work: 37.5 hours a week, 52 weeks a year.
Salary: £33,659 – £37,257 per annum plus £1,000 retention bonus. Holiday: 25 days plus statutory public holidays.
About the Role
The Senior Payroll Officer will jointly oversee the in‑house administration of payroll for approximately 250 staff. The role requires strong payroll knowledge, analytical ability and the ability to interact with staff and finance partners with patience and empathy.
Responsibilities
- HR designated responsibilities
- Direct staff communication
- Payroll monthly input and reconciling procedures
- Payroll monthly reporting submissions for approval by HR, followed by BACS finance payment approval
- Pensions administration
- Exception reporting and data analytics preparation
Qualifications and Experience
- Prior in‑house payroll experience with a minimum of 200 employees, preferably in a supervisory role.
- Professional payroll certification, expected to be at least CIPP level 4 (level 5 desirable).
- Significant payroll experience at a similar level or equivalent certificates in HR Payroll or accountancy (AAT/ACCA); hands‑on payroll experience required.
- Expert knowledge of UK payroll legislation and tax regulations.
- Proficiency in payroll and HR software, and confidence with Excel and Microsoft Office.
- Excellent communication skills combined with patience and empathy for staff and the Trust’s vulnerable children and young people.
- Strong analytical skills to work with the finance team on manual calculations and data reconciliation.

Work Schedule
Office‑based. Term‑time hours: 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, with a ½ hour unpaid break each day. Some flexibility over hours is possible during school holidays.
