The Opportunity

Consortium X is recruiting an experienced Safety Manager to lead the safety management system for the delivery of an Urgent One Way Effector capability within the UK defence Lethality and Protect portfolio. Reporting to the OBI Lead and Chief Engineer, the role owns the generation and execution of the Safety and Environmental Management Plan across a novel, fast-moving weapon system development and testing programme.

This is a high-impact, high-pace role suited to a Qualified System Safety Practitioner with deep Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives safety credentials and proven experience guiding novel weapon system development through complex assurance, testing and integration milestones.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Developing and executing the Safety and Environmental Management Plan in accordance with the Weapons Environment Safety Management System.
  • Leading the delivery of safety processes and procedures, including drafting, maturing and seeking endorsement of safety artefacts such as the Hazard Log and Safety and Environmental Case Report.
  • Assuring technical data provided by suppliers and advising the Chief Engineer, Chief Technical Officer and Senior Safety Responsible on matters they are accountable for.
  • Managing and integrating project safety interests with a wide range of stakeholders, including airworthiness authorities and Heads of Establishments.
  • Providing assurance that supplier tests are safe, compliant with local process and aviation regulations.
  • Identifying and analysing technical hazards and contributing to the development of safety artefacts to enable testing.
  • Advising the Project Team on safety and environmental requirements, conditions and standards to be contracted.

Essential

  • Qualified System Safety Practitioner.
  • Familiarity with Def Stan 00-056 and ASEMS (Acquisition Safety and Environmental Management System).
  • OME safety experience managing the development and integration of novel weapon systems.
  • Demonstrable experience of complex weapons development and testing programmes.
  • Familiarity with OSRP (Ordnance Safety Review Panel) processes.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams on OME testing.
  • Active UK Security Clearance (SC).
  • Sole UK national status.

Desirable

  • Experience executing safety activities from Project Initiation.
  • Qualifications and/or experience in OME assurance.
  • Background of developing innovative and novel delivery approaches.
  • Experience of competitive selection of equipment through demonstration trials.
  • Experience managing suppliers through initial and scaled / full-rate production, particularly for OME.
