Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced emergency nurse to apply for a band 6 post within the resuscitation area of the Emergency Department at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

The resuscitation area has 5 beds and supports acutely unwell patients. The department receives patients from multiple specialities including acute medicine, respiratory, stroke, elderly care, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, trauma and orthopaedics, and neurosurgery. We are one of 12 adult Major Trauma Centres in England, seeing a wide range of advanced trauma patients requiring specialist care.

You will be part of a team of Resus Junior Sister/Charge Nurses and will be required to rotate shifts including days, nights and weekends. Depending on departmental acuity or staffing levels, you may be required to work in other areas of the Emergency Department at the decision of the shift leader.

Main duties of the job

  • Service Delivery and Improvement: contribute to the effective management of the trauma and resuscitation unit; maintain a clean and safe working environment; liaise with zone co-ordinator and shift leader.
  • Patient management: manage a group of patients effectively and liaise with other departments to ensure prompt, high-quality care.
  • Resource use: contribute to the effective use of resources and monitor safe and economical use of supplies and equipment; identify problems and report to the ED Shift Leader/Management Nurse.
  • Safety and governance: assess and report practical hazards and take appropriate action; ensure incidents or complaints are managed in accordance with policy (Datix processes and timely statements).
  • Clinical governance: demonstrate understanding and application of clinical governance and risk management.
  • People management and development: participate in mentorship and practice assessing of students and new staff; coordinate resus operations and ensure safe transfer of patients arriving and leaving the clinical area.

Person specification

Registration

  • NMC registration
  • Extensive experience in emergency care

Experience and Qualifications

  • Registered nurse with extensive experience in emergency care
  • Current ILS Provider
  • Completion of Level 1 Trauma Course or equivalent (TILS)
  • Evidence of post-graduate A&E Course (enrolled or completion)
  • Practice assessor or mentorship module completion
  • Completion or near completion of the ECA level 2 competencies
  • Team Leadership experience
  • ILS/ALS Instructor
  • Evidence of professional development in resuscitation and emergency nursing (e.g., level 2 trauma course or equivalent such as ATNC, TNCC or ETC)
  • Advanced resuscitation skills (ALS, NLS, APLS, EPLS) and wider organisational understanding

Skills

  • Venepuncture and cannulation
  • Basic IT skills – Microsoft Office software

People Management and Development

  • Management experience and development
  • Aware of Trust position and current emergency quality indicators
  • Leadership course

  • Understanding of patient tracking system
