About the role

As Legal Counsel – Privacy, Consumer & Commercial, you will be a key member of a high‑performing legal team, supporting the Legal Director and collaborating across the company. This role involves data privacy and GDPR compliance, consumer and marketing matters, commercial contract support and occasional company secretariat duties.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Believ’s data privacy and GDPR functions, shaping and maintaining data protection policies, procedures and internal controls.
  • Integrate Privacy by Design principles into business operations, conduct risk assessments on core products and services, review DPIAs.
  • Advise on data sharing requests and prepare and negotiate processing and transfer agreements.
  • Coordinate and manage DSARs, data‑breach incidents and regulatory queries.
  • Assess third‑party privacy risks and support supplier onboarding and off‑boarding processes.
  • Ensure data privacy and GDPR policies remain compliant with ISO certifications and updated legislation.
  • Collaborate with IT Security on breach responses and incident management.
  • Deliver training and raise awareness across the business.
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments and communicate impacts to stakeholders.
  • Support the Consumer and Marketing teams by keeping consumer terms and conditions compliant, advising on new customer propositions, advertising, and strategic partnerships.
  • Draft and negotiate commercial agreements – services contracts, energy supply contracts, hardware and software purchase contracts, NDAs, commission agreements and roaming agreements.
  • Provide contract interpretation and dispute support to the Business.
  • Perform company secretariat activities, oversee the trade‑mark portfolio, support M&A and compliance activities as required.

Qualifications

  • Qualified solicitor (SRA) in England & Wales.
  • Minimum 3 years post‑qualification experience, ideally in‑house and in a fast‑paced scale‑up environment.
  • Data protection certification (e.g. IAPP CIPP/E, CIPM, CIPT, AIGP).
  • Strong knowledge of UK GDPR, EU GDPR, PECR, and the ePrivacy Directive.
  • Proven experience in a data protection role and implementation of governance frameworks.
  • Strong consumer protection law knowledge.
  • Familiarity with risk frameworks such as ISO.
  • Commercial contract experience or willingness to learn.
  • Understanding of global privacy laws.
  • Commercial acumen suitable for a start‑up and evolving industry.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Willingness to embed yourself in the business and roll up sleeves.

Location
