Upper Gastrointestinal Clinical Nurse Specialist
We are looking for an enthusiastic band 7 upper gastrointestinal (UGI) clinical nurse specialist (CNS) to join our team at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHT). The post holder will work closely alongside one other existing UGI nurse specialist and be part of a multidisciplinary team consisting of gastroenterology and general surgery consultants, radiologists, endoscopists, dieticians and other professionals such as pharmacy.
The UGI CNS performs a crucial role by providing patient support and advice to patients, carers and relatives, and will be responsible for the continued development of the service and associated pathways to meet the 28‑day faster diagnostic standard.
This is a full‑time, fixed‑term position until 31st January 2027. Applicants should be enthusiastic, motivated and passionate about improving care for patients and should have a minimum of 3 years post‑registration experience. Good knowledge and practice of nursing for gastroenterology and/or endoscopy inpatients or outpatients is essential.
The post holder will be fully supported through daily access to medical staff, weekly MDT meetings, regular departmental meetings and study leave appropriate to the job role.
Main duties of the job
- Provide specialist nursing advice to support and facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients/clients and relatives/carers without supervision in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team in line with local and national targets.
- Develop and deliver the patient pathways within the UGI service, including outpatient clinics, triaging of referrals and providing specialist nursing advice for colleagues and patients.
- Provide specialist nursing care and support and deputise for the line manager in managing the clinical speciality, dealing with complex situations and taking appropriate action in a variety of settings.
- Be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover where required, acting as a professional role model providing direct and indirect clinical care, teaching and research.
- Use specialist nursing knowledge to review and interpret clinical investigatory results, in conjunction with the medical team, to determine the next stage of the pathway (e.g. discharge and referral back to GP, or referral to MDT or specialist services as required).

Person Specification
Education / Qualifications
- Current appropriate professional registration
- Teaching and assessing qualification, or equivalent teaching experience
- 3 years post‑registration experience in a relevant area
- Working to MSc level or equivalent
- Leadership and/or research qualification
Experience
- Experience in either a junior specialty role or team leader role
- Experience with managing patients in a relevant specialist area (e.g. Gastroenterology, Endoscopy, Colorectal)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Skills
- Able to demonstrate highly developed specialist knowledge of own patient group
- Knowledge of research and audit, including implementation of findings and review of outcomes
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Good IT skills, understanding of the MS Office suite
- Demonstrate commitment through involvement in Trust wide initiatives/committees
- Advanced IT skills or use of Excel
