Now is a really exciting time to join our team of forward‑thinking Ageing & Complex Medicine (Elderly Medicine) Consultants at Wrightington Wigan and Leigh (WWL) NHS Foundation Trust and make a real difference to our elderly patients in the Wigan Borough.

We put the patient at the heart of everything we do and strive to deliver and develop a modern and comprehensive Elderly Care service. Applicants with a sub‑specialty interest in Elderly Care or those willing to develop through in‑house training or CPD activities are encouraged. Opportunities are available across inpatient and outpatient with support from the clinical director and divisional management team to build and develop your area of interest.

The full‑time post offers a 10 PA job plan, with the potential to negotiate additional PA’s. Night and weekend on‑call in general medicine and as part of the day service is required. We provide flexible working options and support study leave for CPD with funding up to an agreed limit.

Main Duties

The role includes management of an Acute Comprehensive Geriatric Medicine service and sub‑sub‑specialties including Stroke Medicine, Orthogeriatrics and Frailty Services. You will contribute to a team of six consultants, one Associate Specialist and three Specialist Registrars.

Responsibilities include overseeing 81 acute care of elderly beds (24 orthogeriatric, 22 stroke unit, 42 acute geriatric), supervising one Associate Specialist, three Specialist Registrars, six CMT/GPST and six FY doctors. You will manage specialist clinics (Stroke, TIA, Falls, Parkinson’s disease, Dementia), a one‑stop TIA clinic with same‑day carotid Doppler scanning, CT/MR Scan service and direct access to the vascular team.

In the community you will lead MDT meetings, community clinics/visits and care home visits, focusing on proactive case management, advance care planning and support to the community team of Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Community Matrons.

Person Specification

Skills

  • Managerial structure within the NHS
  • Experience of Audit and its role in Clinical Governance
  • Commitment to training and teaching junior medical staff and other health professionals
  • Ability to work in a flexible manner

Experience/Training

  • CCT – Dual accreditation in GIM and Geriatric Medicine
  • Recent comprehensive experience in Geriatric Medicine

Professional Qualifications

  • Entry on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT
  • MRCP (or equivalent)
  • Full GMC licence to practice
  • MB ChB or equivalent

Knowledge

  • Commitment to development of Acute Medical services within the trust
  • Evidence of being proactive and self‑motivated
  • Ability to work as part of a team
