About Ember

We’re building the future of public transport—convenient, affordable, connected, and zero‑emission. Our goal is to make it easier and more enjoyable to get from A to B with Ember than it is with your own car. Ember is a tech company coordinating monitoring, charging, ticketing and ETA calculations, allowing us to run electric buses more intensively than anyone else, reducing emissions while providing a better passenger experience with features like demand‑responsive stops.

We’re a small team with a handful of routes and 78 buses. We’re scaling 50× while staying lean, increasing efficiency and delivering an even better product experience. We’ve raised equity from leading climate VCs and are looking for mission‑driven individuals to help us grow.

Diversity and Equality

At Ember, we support diversity across our team and customers. We work to ensure every employee feels respected and able to give their best, whether temporary, part‑time or full‑time. We offer flexible working patterns where they make sense and provide compassionate leave policies, including enhanced maternity and paternity leave.

Our Equal Opportunities Policy reflects our approach to diversity and inclusion.

The role

Lead and inspire our Driver and Hub Support teams in Glasgow. The role covers recruitment, management and retention of the strongest driving team in the area and the establishment of the Ember Hub blueprint, which will expand across Scotland in the next 12 months. You will take local responsibility for the day‑to‑day success of our 24/7 service and use technical curiosity to contribute to our technology‑driven growth.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, support and grow an industry‑leading team of drivers, maintaining the highest standards.
  • Act as line manager for all Ember drivers and hub support staff in Glasgow, handling HR, shift assignment, covering and supporting training and development.
  • Run a high‑quality 24/7 operation, ensuring coaches run on time and are well‑maintained, working with drivers, hub and maintenance teams and occasionally getting hands dirty.
  • Define the playbook of a ‘best‑in‑class’ hub and support expansion of future hubs.
  • Be flexible and proactive, responding to unexpected issues in a fast‑growing company.

Requirements

  • Strong sense of what good looks like, regardless of topic.
  • Instinct and curiosity that drives you to solve problems instead of delegating.
  • Excellent organisational skills; nothing is dropped or missed.
  • Willingness to get hands‑on, working through any problem regardless of expertise.
  • Calm, resilient and flexible mindset for unexpected challenges.
  • Proven HR experience and excellent leadership skills.
  • Solid IT skills, including spreadsheets and online systems.
  • Flexibility to work late or early shifts, any day of the week, on occasion, with reasonable scheduling.

Nice to Have

  • Experience working with C, V or D‑level colleagues providing reporting and communication excellence.
  • Leadership experience within the transport industry.

What’s on offer

Salary up to £70,000 per annum, depending on experience, and share options through our share scheme.
