Senior Underwriter in London, UK. AXA XL is a major international player within Property & Casualty commercial lines, insuring companies with the most complex risks across different territories.

The role is within the Casualty Retail team. You will work within authority limits on assignments reflecting expert technical complexity and coordination. This position is an individual contributor whose key responsibilities involve underwriting business in line with the business plan; assisting planning and forecasting; monitoring premium income; ensuring risks remain within limits; maintaining awareness of all claims; providing input on settlement; building relationships with brokers and clients; supporting risk design; and identifying new product development opportunities.

What you’ll be doing

  • Underwrite, manage and service a renewal book and produce new business in accordance with business unit goals. Develop and manage underwriting strategies for both renewals and targets within your portfolio of accounts, including knowledge of the current penetration by product, cross‑marketing penetration and specific plans to increase company share.
  • Provide technical guidance to team members as and when required.
  • Exercise discretion and judgment in the analysis and evaluation of risk.
  • Participate in round‑table discussions on risk assessment and provide mentorship and leadership to peers.
  • Facilitate, support and conduct training to the Casualty team as and when required, e.g. emerging risks / regulatory updates.
  • Build and enhance relationships with brokers and clients and identify and establish new distribution relationships.
  • Maintain expertise with the products, services, priorities and target markets to more effectively enable clients to uncover hidden risks.
  • Promote the company’s expertise by participating in industry conferences and events while regularly conducting and taking leadership roles in client and broker meetings to educate on risk.
  • Maintain compliance with all internal and external underwriting guidelines and legal requirements.
  • Support the business planning and forecasting process; monitor financial exposure within outlined limits; monitor premium income to ensure it remains within set limits.
  • Maintain awareness of all claims advised while supporting and providing input on settlement of claims.
  • Identify and drive new product development opportunities. Effectively cross‑market with other AXA XL lines; meet with brokers and insureds as required. Cultivate key broker relationships in the region to maintain a steady stream of business within our underwriting appetite.
  • Possess an expert level of technical knowledge and skills including product and industry.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to junior underwriters and associates and other functional areas.

You will report to Underwriting Manager – International Casualty, Retail.

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent).

  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills as well as sales and marketing abilities.
  • Understanding and experience of underwriting multinational and captive structured programs.
  • Excellent organisational, time‑management and multi‑tasking skills combined with an excellent work ethic and attention to detail.
  • Ability to develop and understand business processes, strategy and planning.
  • Knowledge of the functionality of systems.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to respond to a changing environment with flexibility and innovation.
  • Excellent customer service and negotiation skills. A proven track record in development of collaborative business relationships with brokers and insureds.
